Thread: Should I join the air force or the navy

You must meet VERY strict requirements to become a pilot. I wouldn't join the Airforce expecting to be a pilot.

You're not going to die just by joining the Military. Most people who join the Air Force never go up in a plane, and many in the Navy don't sail on ships.

So what the hell are you talking about?

Join the Sea Org and audit your way to a better life and empty pockets.

To my knowledge, the Air Force is America's first line of defense whereas the Navy is America's second; thus, it stands to reason that the Air Force can get you killed quicker than the Navy.

So? Unless you're in the elite 0.0000001% of people who actually become fulltime pilots, you'll be sitting pretty in an administrative job or something.

Why on earth would anyone want to be in the military? I really don't understand that. Don't you realize you can get killed?! Especially given our current administration and global situation.

Why on earth would anyone want to drive a car? Don't they realize they could get killed?! Jesus, the military isn't all about hand to hand combat, dogfights... massive battles on the open sea. You've been watching too many movies.

If you become a programmer as a civilian, no one is going to kill you. You can live a nice, happy, calm, peaceful life coding away in safety. On the other hand, if you choose to become a programmer for the armed forces, you must first go through boot camp, a euphemism for hell.

Hahaha sure they will. Plus, if there's a war you get sucked up into a draft anyway.

No, bootcamp isn't a "euphemism for hell" like you see depicted in movies and on TV.

After that, there is no guarantee that you'll be a programmer. Anyone in the armed forces is subject to assignment, so if they decide you're better used as a foot soldier, that's what you're gonna be.

Even if you are used as a programmer, you still can't decide what sort of programs you'll get to work on. You'll have no freedom to do what makes you happy.

Yes you will! You'll have as much freedom had you got a job as a civillian.

And then, on top of all of that, there is always the chance that you will be killed in any number of unpleasant manners. Where on earth is the upside to enlisting?

There's more of a chance of dying in a car accident than there is being KIA in todays world.
Upside to enlisting? There's WAY to many things to list.

Please, get a clue.

Whats wrong with the Army?? Thats where I plan on going. (Im in Australia, btw)

Being in a plane:
RISK - Being shot down. Pilot error. Running out of fuel.
ADVANTAGE - In the air. Moving fast.

Being on a ship:
RISK - Being sunk.
ADVANTAGE - Can attack remote targets with artillery.

Being on the ground:
RISK - Being bombed by air.
ADVANTAGE - Can have large forces. Easier to go undetected (no radar, etc)

This is just the way I see it. I chose army.

My decision on which to join wouldn't be based on this thread, but after posting this question on a couple message boards, it seems as if the majority is telling me to join the air force.

Anyways, I'm not concerned, I just want to benefit from the experience and the education.

I also learned that you can get an associates degree from the air force community college, but they also allow you to take courses at local colleges (depending where you're stationed) to complete your bachelors (if anyone's interested).

You'll get to see a lot more of the world being in the navy than the air force.

I say again... if you join the airforce, you (in all reality) WON'T become a pilot. Not everyone in the airforce gets their own personal jet.

I'm not an aspiring pilot though, I'm an aspiring programmer

Anyways, I'm already in training courses for c++/visual c++.net, but I'm not getting college credit for it- I'm just doing it because I enjoy programming. We get to build large real world projects, and what you learn in the class is >= what you learn in college because you're actually programming. By the time I join the air force, I'll just have to take some classes to keep up with my skills, and hopefully get the degree I want

Although I want to go to the air force so I can get the government to pay for my education (and to become a better person- of course ), and the c++ classes I'm taking now cost a lot, and I'm not from a rich family.

Now's not the time to join the armed services, in my opinion. If you're assigned to a combat situation in Iraq or North Korea, death is certainly a possibility--that's the whole reason behind the military.

I don't know about the Army, Marines, or Air Force; but the Navy has some odd traditions, at least the submarine crews do.
