The southerners chose to fight for their "right" to have slaves. They died because they believed the right to keep slaves was
    worth fighting for.
I don't think so. They were fighting for the right to govern
themselves. Only at a certain point of the war did
Lincoln guarentee freedom to the slaves. Another example
would be the our revolution. Our founders did not fight
because tarrifs were too high. They fought because
they wanted to right to govern themselves the way they saw fit.

How do you tell between a flase prophet and a true one? It's like that riddle with the two guards. Ask them "If I asked the other guy who was the false prophet, what would he tell me?". They'd both give you the same answer, and that would be the true prophet. But then if you want to get into that, a flase prophet won't always lie, because in order to decieve you, he'll mix lies in with truth.

I was reading the article in the paper yesterday morning, personally, I just wish they'd done history a favor and chosen a better looking woman to clone.. Am I wrong? Who's with me?

You look at what fruits they produce?

The one who looks like a witch is the scientist. I don't
think they have released pictures of the mother.

Real funny.. i cant stop laughing.. look where this is ending up.. A thread on religion rather than the new achievment.. In another 10 years cloning will be a fact of life.. No one will complain then.. When they invented the X-ray there was a huge hue and cry.. about ethics, seiing the inside of a person etc etc etc... But now look... Will anyone say.. "X-RAY.. it is unethical"...

So people here who understand the benifits of this new technology just keep quite.. let other make a fuss about it, shout, cry what ever.. In 10years they will fall in line...

You have to be kidding. You think the American public will
let this happen on our soil? What about when they invented
the A-bomb and gas chambers. Your analogy doesn't make any
    sense.

There is almost no benefits to reproductive cloning anyways and
if they perfect non-reproductive cloning there would be
no benefits. Correct me if I'm wrong, your argument is
that there are x amount people who believe it's "ok" so it must be ethical?

You make no sense: Evidently the American public DID let the A-bomb and the gas chambers "happen on their soil".

If they perfect non-reproductive cloning there would be no benefits? .......... uh.... yea there would.

While I do believe that cloning will eventually become mainstream, I have to disagree with everyone bringing up other scientific advances slowly becoming accepted as proof. Whos to say that cloning will be like those others for certain? Maybe it will end up closer to animal/human testing which after so many years is still not accepted? One could use that same argument for ANY idea that is not accepted now, so I don't think its a valid stance, nor do I think it is proof that one should embrace cloning.

I dont think he was using it as proof that we should embrace cloning now. He was using it as evidence that it will eventually become mainstream like so many other scientific advances that have been opposed because of ignorance and religion, despite how strongly the opposition is opposed to it. It wasnt a "it will become mainstream eventually so we should all embrace it now" argument, but more of a "let them cry all they want about how immoral, etc it is, it wil eventually become mainstream anyways"

Errr... who are you talking about when you say "he"? If you mean Clyde, my post was a general statement, not directed towards him.

I'm not saying everybody says this, or that it is even a bad argument when used in conjunction with other arguments for cloning. But all too often I see people just shun off statements others make against some of the things science does by simply stating examples of other scientific ideas slowly becoming mainstream. I mean I personally have reservations about cloning - mostly because I haven't had the time to study it fully and I refuse to embrace something solely on what scientists say - and I find it demeaning and condescending to be compared to people who were against things like X-rays, lightning rods, open heart surgery, etc. And there ARE a lot of people who say "it will become mainstream eventually so we should all embrace it now".

P.S. I agree ClownPimp, I miss the God thread too I finally gave up out of frustration when two things happened back to back. One was Sentaku using the bible to proove the bible for the upteen millionth time and again showing that he had no idea what any of us were talking about. The second was after 100 posts or so of all of us showing that miracles have no proof, somebody (I forget who) came on saying "Of course God exists, look at all the miracles in the world!" Grrr....

If something benefits society generally speaking it does end up mainstream. Ie. If people are against something without tangible reasons and what they are against has definitive benfits then inevitably given time society takes it up.

Just like xrays, or transplants. Non-reproductive cloning, IS like this and will end up used in mainstream technology.

Reproductive cloning is another matter, whether it becomes common place depends on how much demand there is for it.

I completely agree, I think that there is a 99.999% chance that non-reproductive cloning will be accepted inevitably. I just don't like it when somebody voices a concern over a new scientific advancement being waved off with nothing more than a "Bah, thats what people like you said about X-rays." You definately don't do that though Clyde

[edit] Oops, that last line could be taken as sarcasm - I really mean it, you don't do that Clyde! [/edit]
