Thread: Axis of stupidity

Geez, I gotta say - Mr Bush is starting to scare me, I am ripe for drafting at 26 years of age. This situation doesn't look real good.

Granted war is probably not going to be the likely outcome, but if the letter came, or they drew your number or however it works, would you go?

Of course I'd go but I seriously doubt it would come to drafting because the Iraqi army is in serious disarray right now. If a war breaks out it will probably be over as quick as it was in the early 90s.

My understanding is that 18-year-old's must still register with the Selective Service Commission (does it still go by that name?). My son did three years ago, anyway.

As to the original question? Yes, I'd go. Actually, "went" would be more appropriate in my case. Voluntarily.

If I had it to do over, would I go? I've asked myself that question for the last 27 years, but, yeah, I'd do it again. Not exactly the most fun-filled four years of my life, mind you, but I wouldn't trade them.

Certainly things get a little more uncomfortable when one is fighting a war on more than one front - and the Korean army would be no push over. And you would have to wonder who else may take advantage of the situation should the resources of the US armed forces become overstretched.

I don't think I would go in a draft. I can't see the attraction in fighting in a jungle - or even a desert for that matter.

The reason I bring it up is that it has been mentioned recently in Australia, should we have to assist the US in any large scale operations, as an option.

There is no attraction to war. Period. Two childhood friends were killed in Viet Nam. A couple of more got shot up pretty good.

The politics of that conflict notwithstanding, everyone has to make up his/her mind as to what direction to take. You'll live with that decision for the remainder of your life. I wouldn't offer an opinion, one way or the other.

I read a story about an American businessman, working in London, who got into a conversation with a British colleague concerning Viet Nam. The American had bailed off to Canada to avoid the draft suggesting that there was no way he would go to war like so many other Americans did. His British friend looked at him, rather puzzled, and responded, "But, they were your mates."

Don't expect anyone out there to understand, but I found that rather revealing...and touching.

My answer is still the same....I'd go and every American should be proud of their country and be willing to go to war for it.

I'm not entirely sure what I would do if I was drafted. I guess it would depend upon the war. If I thought that my country was justified, I might show up for duty and hope that my knowledge would mean that I could be a techie kind of guy rather than a foot soldier. If I thought that the war should not be fought, then I would be a concientious objector. In that case if I had no other choice, I'd flee the country. I would never kill unless I felt it was absolutely necessary. My morals come before my country.
