I can say it because I went through what you kids are going through. I can remember clearly a spanish teacher who at the time I thought was out to make my life miserable. It took me nearly a year that I was giving her an equally hard time. In the case of thinking that you're smarter than a teacher and that you can pick up anything a teacher gives you or shows you faster than he/she could, then try teaching.

If you're going to keep bickering take it to PMs already. The general point has been discussed.

Some teachers are not the brighest people at all, but by no means at all are all teachers idiots. Just for example I'm going to run down the line on my teachers I have this year...

1st hr - Study Hall - no teacher

2nd hr - Programming 1 (Pascal) - The teacher is a high school Pascal teacher for a reason. I'm thinking that he ventured into programming as a new field. He teaches both VB and Pascal at our school. I know for persononal use he uses Delphi. As to C/C++ he hasn't spent much time at all on it. In general as a human he is fairly intelligent but when it comes to teaching programming he is not that great. Many of the students still have no idea what's going on in the class, and a large part of that is because he doesn't have a good method of teaching.

3rd hr - English 11 - The teacher is the biggest b*tch alive! I'm not even going to comment on her, because my hatred for her runs too deep.

4th hr - History - This teacher is a pretty good guy. He's not the smartest guy in the world, nor is he the best teacher. However, he is a good person, who has been able to get the respect of the class.

    5th hr - Lunch - no teacher

6th hr - New Media 1 (it's a computer graphics type of class) - This teacher is, also, a pretty good guy. He's a good teacher, and he knows a lot about what he is teaching. I should mention that he retired from being in the computer art field a few years back. ***In the class so far we've used Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Flash.

7th hr - Trigonometry - This teacher is very smart. She's not a bad teacher at all, but she doesn't teach a class in such a way that makes it easy to learn. She also came from another field to become a math teacher.

From my experiences over the past few years, I'd say that for the most part teachers who had experience in another field for a long time are much better teachers.

I wouldn't think much of it if this weren't face_master's 800th "My teachers sux0r and I am teh l33t!!" type of thread.

    Yeesh.

So you self-taught yourself computers and in doing so surpassed your teacher. Bra-vo.

I remember when I was entering my freshman year, I wanted to skip the pre-req to my current C++ class, which was a VB course. I tried appealing to him and saying that I'd self-taught myself enough C where I felt VB was "below" me, but he scoffed and said something along the lines of "Every kid who knows more than average about a computer thinks they're geniuses. You have to take the course."

Ehhh.....there's more I wanted to say but I'm lazy. I think I'll go outside....

Another thought here, if I may.

A number of posts have suggested that teachers could be making a great deal more money on the "outside" if they were any good.

A contract programmer makes $80,000 per year (hypothetically). Sounds like good money. Now, factor in health insurance (unpaid), taxes (your job to do), retirement (set up your own), vacation time (unpaid), hours of work (whatever your current employer expects).

You can see the point I'm trying to make here. The average, and even above-average, programmer doesn't make the "gazillion dollars per year" that many of you seem to think he/she does. It simply doesn't happen.

A full-time teacher, with full benefits, may easily out-strip, or, at least, equal, his/her counterpart when everything is factored in.

My dream? I want to be the last plumber in New York City. Uncle Bill will be calling on me for financial advice.

    Talking

I was smarter than some of my teachers at school and did not care for some of them either. Try to to take something positive from every teacher you had- good and bad. I learned alot of things. Also, now I teach college CS- I reflect back on when I was in school and try to things better. Also, being a teacher/instructor is not easy- l have learned this from the other side of the desk.

    > A contract programmer makes $80,000 per year
    Mmmm

I've seen SEVERAL technical/computer science/microcomputer jobs in my area.

I thought $65,000 per year was good.
    Then, I saw 70, then I saw 80, then I saw 94.

The other night, I saw $100,000 per year.
That's with very minimal requirements(if any) along with full, DETAILED benefits. A nice little rap sheet.

Some of them require roughly 3 years expierence, where as a job with Home Family Insurance required absolutely nothing. No age, no Highschool diploma, no drivers license, nothing. $80k per year with detailed benefits. Flexible spending plans, etc.

Mom was telling me the other day of a kid who makes soo much money a year..has his transportation PAID for by the company(here, buy a car), and just a load of things. I believe he was a HS dropout.

Just gotta be in the right area I guess.

My mom is a highschool LD teacher. $32,000 per year about. Yes, benefits. But, due to teh amount of time she puts in on the clock, she's probably only making $10 an hour as opposed to what she's actually paid for which is $17 per hour for 8 hours. Yet, she stays after nearly everyday untill anytime from 7-9 PM.

Teachers are poor.(both of my parents are in the profession).

    800th, 8th, same difference.

Hell, I just noticed you said you were a freshman. I thought I knew more programming than my teacher in my freshman year...I've since stopped thinking such childish things.
