I 've just been thinking about this lately. You know, it really irritates me when people say to you something like "IF you dont shut down the compute properly and just turn it off from the switch it will break it". (This is partly true - it does affect the HDD in some way, but i'm just using this as an example). And i'm like "Ok, how do you know this? Just becuase somebody told you, how do you know its true? Do you understand the workings of a computer's hardware? Huh? Didn't think so. Can you back up your clain with evidence? NO! You suck. Another example is how my mum told me that you can only charge your mobile after the battery is completely depleated. And again I asked her how she knew this and what evidence she had. She said "I'm not a scientist, how would I know?" And I though 'well, if you dont know why its bad to charge the phone before its run out, how do you know this at all?' But I didn't incase she'd blow up at me or something. Parents are unpredictable.

I don't quite see how that can be true - practically every mobile phone these days allows you to charge even if you've got 3/4 of battery power left. If it was so bad for the phone, wouldn't logic suggest that the manufacturers would prevent you from doing this?

Don't know about phones, but some rechargable batteries have to be depleted before you recharge them. If they're not, the next time you charge them, they'll only charge to the level of the last charge.

Many rechargeable batteries have a 'memory effect'. If it still has say 1/4 of the life left when you recharge, it will obviously only put 3/4 of the total energy back into the battery. The memory effect means that over time, if you were to keep doing this, the battery would effectively think it's full capacity was this 3/4 value and only ever store that much energy. Thus reducing the battery capacity.

I do believe that mobile phone batteries (lithium ion?) have this 'memory effect'.

Manufacturers wouldn't not let you recharge your phone unless it was completely depleted. People need a mobile phone to be a convenience and to be ready to use in an emergency. They therefore must be able to recharge it whenever (before a long car journey for instance) is appropriate.

Powering off a computer with a non-journaling filesystem can be bad for the computer and that's one reason why it's said not to do it. You can lose vital information and corrupt disks without a proper shutdown. Journaling filesystems handle abrupt shutdowns much better but it's still not the suggested way to power off your computer.

The business with rechargable batteries "memory" is well documented - search google. If you want positive proof that switching off your machine can cause damage - try it a few times, ideally when you have caches full of unwritten data.

the only moble phones that should be charged after dipleted are ones with nickle cadium batteries (ni/ca) most do the reason is that after the ni-ca reaction there "gunk" that is leftover and it takes up space meant for ni-ca after recharging when the battery is totally depleted then the gunk goes away allowing maxium battery space. this is the same with r-c cars.

I don't think manufacturers will do that even if you shouldn't chanrge the battery untill it's totally empty...
Because they'l love it if you buy a new battery or even a mobile phone, often.

yes but you dont have to know how a car works to drive it. it isnt necessary to have complete mechanical knowledge of everything that you use to use it. that would quite a little bit of knowledge. i can relate where you are coming from though that some basic knowledge is needed.

I don't know. My mum would say that you shouldn't hold a car on the clutch or that you shouldn't crunch gears. Both are reasonable statements to make and you don't need to know anything about gearboxes or clutches.
