God - I hate having to exist on 56K. IT SUCKS!!

I am really looking at getting broadband, but I've got to convince my flatmate of the benefits. He has the crappest luck with computers - They always f#ckup on him, and so he is hesident about having to change the setup he has - even in the slightest. As opposed to me - I am always arm deap in my PCs messing about with stuff. He doesnt even like me going near his computer!

    Ha Luddites!

Out of interest - who else suffers with the curse of the 56k? - this isnt really a poll, but I have wondered if its just me - mind I do remember Govtcheez saying he still uses it......So who else?

Hmm, I wish my area had DSL... I've heard cable is faster. I've also heard DSL is faster. Does anyone know? I'm confused....

    Dependes
Cable lines are shared therefor inharently slower then DSL. But DSL only works for so many miles (I forget how many) then It drops off. So basicly dsl is great for the city, but cable is better where I live. The middle of no where.

    56K rules.

Anybody notice that broadband companies are dropping like flies?

Miles and miles of dark fiberoptic all over this country.

The web is rapidly leaving behind the actual capability of many of its users because broadband is just not that available to the majority of the world.

Often I yearn for my 300 Baud modem on my VIC20. Now that was nice.

Personally- I can't afford broad band. But I realize that companies are making it so affordable that they are going broke.

So I am not sure what the solution is.

In order to stay in bussnes your gross profit must be higher then you loss. This number is called your net profit. In order to compete with dial up Broad band commpanies need to charge prices that are lower then they can support hance they go out of bussness.

To fix this a commpny would have to have a wide enough user base to support low rates since more custormers == lower prices, for all. Maybe Bill gates will buy up all the lines and provide Broadband Internet service.

Not true, bubba. True DSL is slower than cable, and
the stuff they sell as iDSL is slower yet. To get
true genuine DSL, you have to live within 3000
yards of a telephone company's main switching
office; anything farther out and you're stuck with
iDSL, which is really disguised ISDN.
DSL is a p****k to set up and maintain, and if you
are desperate enough to sign up, the usual sign up
minimum is a 2-year committment; add to that the cost
of DSL vs cable--extremely expensive vs cheap, and
you should begin to see why I was so depressed
    before I got cable.
