So, do you consider HTML to be a programming language then?

Java. I don't consider HTML a programming language so I didn't vote for that one.

    >>html is a language.
Yes, it is a language, hence its name (as you pointed out). But is it a programming language? It's name suggests not (markup language), and it's format is nothing like a procedural/OOP programming language. Anyways, I'm OT for this thread, and my question is rhetorical, so just ignore me

I agree with Hammer, HTML is not a programming language. I started with html, and then learned java, Ill vote for Java then.

That poll is huge, what is the maximum number of items for a poll or is there?

//Edit, wow Smalltalk is up there. I learned that this year. Does anyone else program, or used to program with it?

HTML is absolutely not a programming language. It's a formatting language, a way of making text look pretty.

I would say that HTML is a definition much like the insides of a RTF document is a definition.

You can create an RTF document by merely typing special tags and codes into a standard text file.

You can do the same with HTML.

The output: formatted text. You would use WordPad, Word, or another word processor that supports RTF documents to view the document. Likewise, you'd use a web browser to view an HTML document.

Of course, HTML has a few more features, but that's hardly noteworthy to call it a "programming" language.

uh... you have no idea what you are talking about.

    HTML = HyperText Markup Langauge

if it was a programming langauge it would be HTPL.

saying HTML is a programming language is like saying English is a programming language.

"though i can't stand to see Pascal or BASIC as a programming language"

This makes no sense. Just because they are old as all get out doesn't mean that they don't deserve to be called programming languages. Trying to convince me that BASIC and PASCAL aren't programming languages is like trying to convince me that FORTRAN or COBOL isn't a programming language. Saying that PASCAL isn't a programming langauge because it is old is like saying that your grandfather isn't a person.

LMFAO! My sides are killing me now. I had to wipe away the tears just to post.

    >>if it was a programming langauge it would be HTPL.

    Yup.

HTML is not a programming language.

... Oh, and, uh, my first language was Basic.

    15. I wanted to have more (!), but that was the limit. Seems like the mods can change the max though, since after HTML was added, it is now 16.

I don't consider HTML a programming language though. Then Excel, Word, Access and similar would be too since they also have formatting commands (tags).

wierd, i started learning BASIC when i was 6 also
No I DIDN'T steal my name from Misro$ofts OS, it's pure coincidence.

The lines around my name (-) are only there because i needed a name over the 3 character minimum letter limit
