Exactly what do I need to reinstall to ensure Java will work properly with my browser

Exactly what do I need to reinstall to ensure Java will work properly with my browsers?

That stupid windows update thing doesn't let me install it because it says there are no updates available for my system.

    This is stupid.

I deleted that other thread I posted on this subject because I didn't think anyone was taking my seriously. "Oh did you delete the little teddy bear icon? well that was a java module needed to run java virtual machine on your computer!" Well after reading the microsoft website for about 2 seconds after I deleted that thread I realized that very well could be my problem (doh, I'm a loser) but now I don't know where to go to reinstall it.

    EDIT:
    does this look right?

all right i guess i have to do some reading. by the way I installed the java runtime environment and I am still getting the same problems (it is saying that jre was not found where my registry said it was, and that my java installation may be corrupted and appplets will not work (!))

ok yes i have already tried downloading several from your magic crystal ball and NONE OF THEM ARE VALID...it gives me errors saying the script isnt' valid to work with the application.

Thank you for your help. I would have been hesitant to even consider editing the registry after an incident I had, but that thing doesn't come up anymore. Now I can actually install stuff and hopefully easily fix the Java problem.

ok i deleted (and backed up) that registry key. now it doesn't come up when I try to install java, but why does it still come up for visual studio .net?

Am I even supposed to be using microsoft installers (msi) on XP? I would've thought the NT version would work with XP.

I have XP and had no problems installing the J2SE SDK. Which one are you trying to install?
