    Decision 2002 America

Control of Congress--and thus whether President Bush's legislation will easily pass through--rests on a few very close Senate and House races. In Missouri, residents have been bombarded with political advertising for and against either incumbent Democrat Jean Carnahan or Republican Jim Talent as well as advertising for various state constitutional amendments and referendums.

The question is will you be voting this Tuesday?

Actually, if I'm thinking correctly, you may go vote and be excused from school because of it. I think this also applies to getting off of work as well. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not going to vote; I don't want to. I'm old enough, I have
plenty of time... Still though, I'm not going to.

I was going to vote absentee, but I forgot about it for too long and then it was too late to get an app.

Didn't matter - the candidate I would have voted for for governor won by a huge margin (Jennifer Granholm - MI's first female gov)

    I'm not from Florida but...

Jeb won. Bad! - simply because I don't like W that much and I think Jeb won because of who is brother is and not because of what he can do for the state.

    Indoor smoking bad pass. Good!

Reduced Class Size passed. AWSOME! The most important thing in our economy (LONG TERM), which is rapidly becoming a pure service based economy, is education. Smaller classes give MUCH better education.

Thruman lost. Isn't he really really old and retired in SC? Maybe I'm missing something.

The constitutional amendment preventing the enclosure of a pregnant pig passed. I'm going to assume you're full of it, but I say let them run free!

Jeb was gov two years before GW was president.

I voted against this because I've never had a problem finding restaruants with no smoking. I can't stand the smell of smoke but I don't feel I have any right to tell someone how to run their business.

Good argument but we should never force the government to spend more than it has. This is cause for immediate cuts or tax increase. I'm not happy about that fact. I'm sure it will mean an increase in my property tax.

Nope, this was really on the ballot. Some environmentalists didn't like the fact that farmers caged pregnant pigs. But.... there's a reason. Pigs apparently trample their young and kill them. They are confined in such a way as to save the lives of the young pigs. This is going to probably mean a load of difficulty for farmers. But "Save the Pigs" emotionally charges people and crap like this passes.

Of course he was gov for 2 years (1/2 a term) before GW was pres. But to get reelected his borther made 12 campaign trips to the state and raised tons of money. It was still a close race even with all of the money he raised and when he made every effor to link himself with his brother and take advantage of his brother's endorsement.

I agree with you, it isn't a good thing at all...however, in the long term only the well educated are going to be able to do well in this economy we are creating (this is another problem and arguement unto itself). Therefore by striving to educate everyone, not just those that can afford non-public schools, we are ensuring in the future that the economy will be better. Moreover, children of educated people are many times more likely (I have the figuress somewhere) to be as well educated, or more educated than their parents, so the cycle continues.

I'll note that while we used to be near the top of the list of national rate of high school graduation, we are now down to 23rd, and while we've dropped that far automation, and our trade deficet are still growing tramendously. I have no problem with automation, but if people don't have the skills to get jobs after their jobs are taken over by machines we have a diffrent problem that must be addressed.

    "Save the Pigs"...

LOL, well, i suppose this is what's best for the pigs...but why the heck was a constitutional ammendment needed???? Why not a simple law?

First, the class size amendment bit, <snl character="BushSr"> its bad, bad!</snl>

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not against education, but you are talking about a $2billion+ proposal to lower class size, which has not been proven conclusively to have any affect on educational quality.

Jeb FCAT plan may be no better, but at least its much much cheaper.

Second, this pigs bit, yep, its is now part of the state constitution. No joke.

    And the indoor smoking ban...

I don't feel I have any right to tell someone how to run their business.
Its not a matter of business practice, its a matter of public health. In four words: Cigarette smoke causes cancer.
