    radon vs. geforce

This has been ........ing me off, my friend keeps telling me that the relationship between ati and nvidia cards is like that of amd and intel, about the same but the ati cards are much cheaper. I keep telling him its not like that because tests have shown that geforce cards kick ati ass!

    so, what is better?

The radeon 9700 is currently the fastest card on the market.

The GEForce 4 Ti500 is Currently the fastest video technology in the world. ON _anything_. Makes ATI look like it blows chunks.

Look at the actual GPU specifics, card bus and memory information, and then go to www.madonion.com and get the industry defacto standard program for benchmarking video cards:

tomshardware.com provides very good benchmarks of different video cards. They use the same system with just the video card differing, so that the benchmarks are not biased in anybody's favour.

The Radeon 9700Pro outperforms the Geforce 4 Ti4600.

For instance in 3DMark2001 SE the Geforce 4 Ti4600 scores 11705 against the Radeon 9700Pro's 12817. This is at 1280x1024 32bit 60 Hz.

    Depends on what you want:

    Best overall: Radeon 9700
    Best value: GeForce4 TI4200
    In between: GeForce4 TI4600

    This is just IMO anyway...

I agree as of right now. The market moves fast for these items and this statement may not be true next month.

Oh and in reply to the first post, the amd/intel analogy doesn't fit. ATI's radeon 9700 retails for $399. Costs more than most cpu's the two companies have to offer.

ATI is the current leader.... a while back it was GeForce.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/...104/index.html

As stated... tomshardware usually has good information about hardware and relative comparisons.

But the whole thing is, it really depends what you are buying. eg if you are buying the best card for the money, you would be buying the 9700... but what if you were buying mid range.

I am picking up a new laptop soon. It certainly isn't an Alienware, but I want a good video card. I am looking for a Geforce because in the range I am going for... that is the best bang for the buck.

Well, they're all the same if you like to play Counter-strike... either way, your fps maxes out at 100.

True, it does max out at 100, but there's other features to graphics cards besides FPS. There's shading, bitmapping, antialiasing, and all of those other cool effects. When you start benchmarking those, you will find a better card (for CS; obviously there's other games that don't max out in FPS).

Id say just wait till next month and get the newest from Nvidia. I recomend anything from them due to the stability of their drivers. Ive had a Tnt, Tnt2 ultra, a geforce 2, and now a geforce3 ti500 and have enjoyed all of them.
