    ABM Missile Treaty

Im writing a paper for history on the importance of the amb treaty when it was created compared to its significance in todays society. I was wondering if some of you guys who were around back then could give me some background information (your stories/opionons or links to info) about how life was like then having to think about these things(worrying about the red scare, nuclear war, ...........) and what the nations general attitude was during these times.

Your talking back when it was actually okay to smoke weed in the service. I think the program was based out of ellsworth afb back in th 70's, i truly don't know to much about it since i was never really stationed there. A few TDY's perhaps but thats was it. As far as worrying about nukes back then, we had nukes too. I think it was like everything else , the initial impression for me anyways... try this link for more on the militrary.

I hope this helps, i am always reluctant to give out too much info about certain things about the past since it still holds water today but you can always find the majority of it on the news or internet. I never did understand that.
good luck on your project and let me know how it went.

Well what im wanting to know, are these things that the average family would think about or talk about around the dinner table or what not. What were some of the stories that papers focused their time on and so on. Im trying to get the overall mood of the nation towards the ABM treaty at the time. I have plenty of information for the now part but all the info I keep finding about for back then says the same things over and over and I need more info.

Depends on your family and where they were. Some people went to Vietnam in the late 60's to early 70's. (Here in Australia it was a lottery on your birthday. If yours was draw you went to Vietnam. That was much more of a concern here.)

I was incredulous that the world allowed MAD (mutual assured destruction) to flourish.
SDI (Star Wars) by Regan in the early '80's was slightly better. In truth it was more about bankrupting the Soviets. If they could not keep up with the nuke arms race then they would need to ensure that the race stopped (and Regan was already taking them to task over their RADAR that did not meet the ABM)

Not much has changed since the end of the Cold War. As the US is still to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty which is the first step to nuclear disarmament. And has now embarked on its 'useable nukes' or 'mini nukes' program (for bunker busting and first strikes against non nuke countries)
and so the ABM will be null and void and there will be a new arms race in Asia (my backyard).

It was similar to todays terrorist crisis, you learned to live with it. Less was know then, as only TV and papers, no internet or home PC's ect.

Of course we had just lost in Vietnam and the 'domino effect' was being bandied about. Anti communist rhetoric was at its height. 'Reds under the bed' ect. This was used to justify the 10s of thousands of nukes costing 100s of billions.

Thanks for the info. Ive tried pulling up old new paper articlese from local papers at the main library branch down town with no luck for what I need. Ive done tons of searches on google with different keywords but no luck in pulling up information about the 70's other than directly related to abm, anyone have any ideas or links to any articles about 70's life?
