    Question non-paying jobs for programmers, anyone here do this to help you get a real job?

    Hello, I'm just curious, has anyone here taken a non-paying job as a programmer to help you get a real job?

    I'm considering this because I don't have a degree, and I'm currently getting a master's certificate. I'm going to have to compete with my classmates, half of which have real world programming experience, or other technical computer related jobs.

    If anyone has done this, what types of hours did you work, how long did you do it for. Did you have a degree, or something similar.

    Please tell me your experience

    Thanks

    I didn't, but I think you should. consider it like an internship. many of those you don't get paid for. You have to get some cheezy experience up front. my progression was:

    part time ASP-->full time flash/html/asp-->Win32API C++ at startup-->stable,serious Win32API C++

    I think your experience with C/C++ for no pay would probably be better than my ASP work. ASP isn't really comparable to C++ after all.

    My college requires an unpaid internship. Good experience outside of class learning, good for the resume, good way to make contacts.
