Microsoft will eliminate pirated software. We will begin to see this plan come to fruitation very soon because all the groundwork is set. This will be a big blow to Linux and a boon to Microsoft and its relationship with corporations seeking copyright security
Money doesn't matter to Linux in general. People developing for it don't really care about pirated software on other platforms. It does matter, however, to computer users in general. If pirating was totally elimenated tomarrow, I am sure a lot of people would switch to Linux, where they can still get virtually everthing for free. That said, stopping all piracy is imposssible, and forced registration (and re-registration, if you change a moderate amount of hardware), will probably make Linux grow more as well.

Corporatons will not produce products for Linux if all of their return will be squandered by software pirates. While a choice exists to have their investments protected they will choose to do so.

.NET security goes way beyond mere registration.

    >its bogus C# is just another Java...

No. C# seems to be what Java should have been.
Java is a platform independent crappy language.
C# could be a platform independent really nice language.

C# will not replace C/C++. It will replace VB and Java
for applications ( not applets though ).

The more I learn of C#, the more I see it's
good design. The more I learn of Java, the more
I see that my personal prejudices were way too
    good.

as with java i cannot stomach the look and feel of the language that is one of the major reasons i will not use it... others include i can no longer stomach microsoft their really begi... wait they've already crossed the line can no body see this... they have broken about every anti-trust law on the earth... talk about trying to destroy the competition...

now here is why with an example .NET will not ever take over... it will (possibly)dominate for a short while then will start to lose its grip...

    OpenGL vs. Direct-X

    points:

    1. Microsoft Agrees to Support OpenGL NO MATTER WHAT
    2. Microsoft Buys Direct-X claims it is better trys to prove it but releaseing a terrible software driver for OpenGL
    3. SGI Writes there own software driver Blows Direct-X away
4.Microsoft Humiliated(not) is forced to write a decent(not again) software OpenGL
    5. never the less thier plan has succeded all hardware supports Direct-X very few support OpenGL
    6. Majority of Developers Use Direct-X
    7. 3D rendering software designers Use OpenGL why?
    8. a few hardware vendors slowly(with protest from microsoft) begin supporting Direct-X
    9. developers catch on OpenGL altough speed was a secondary concern is still faster that Direct-X
    10. Game Developers Start writing for both
    11. Microsoft Decides to no longer update OpenGL drivers give one last(haf a--ed) Driver
    12. SGI gives up on GL for Windows...
    13. ID developes on GL only, a Blow to microsoft though you may not think it
    14. More Developers Use GL & hardware begins to really support GL
    15. since the release of OpenGL 1.2 all Pro 3D renders use GL as primary cause Dx cant compete

    conclusion:

OpenGL has not caught up in users though still lacks full hardware support more people are realizing OpenGL looks better and is still faster than Direct-X even though Direct-X was built for speed,

    Outlook:
with the release of OpenGL 1.3 specs OpenGL will pevail... unless Microsoft Drops Everything and trys to catch up with OpenGL which contrary to popular belief is far superior in functionality speed power and its abilities...

Microsoft hasn't released anything yet. Sure there is a Beta2, but their new products are still being worked on. In terms of games, they now will have X-BOX. I think MS will do just fine in the graphics department. Remember I64 is comming out in November. The literature on I64 says that it will help programmers who want to use 3d graphics. We'll have to see how DirectX handles that.

    >In terms of games, they now will have X-BOX

    first aside from hardware problems...

Microsoft Demands that their games be packaged with the X-Box (monopolizing comes to mind)

second because of this no body will pay 499 - 1200 dollars for a macine which WHICH CAN'T BE FULLY USED OUT OF THE BOX!! WHY SHOULD I PAY AN EXTRA $30 TO PLAY DVDS ONCE IVE BOUGHT THE DAMN BOX!!!

again not a rant against you so don't bother defending MS...

    >We'll have to see how DirectX handles that.

i for one would love to see Direct-X made capable of what MS says it is capable of...but is not

but i still would not use it after what the did to OpenGL they lied broke a contract and are against any developement of it... so Direct-X can prevail

    you know...

AS good as microsoft may seem to be to you, you'll be finding that as new technology comes Linux will be the early adopter more and more often.

It already supports the IA-64 architecture thanks to Intel's support, and since AMD has caught on and decided to help support porting we'll see Linux on the Sledgehammer platform any time now.

Linux really will have more time to take advantage of the features of these platforms and come the MS release(s), we'll get to see whether or not they have done as good an optimizing job.

This is jumping back in the thread just a bit-- but this is totally true.

Much of the MS popularity is based on 2 items- they build decent products and (I think more importantly) everyone uses their stuff. Who doesn't have Word or Excel? Not too many people. This is especially true in the business world.

The main reason that everyone has this software is because it is so easy to copy and distribute. I cannot wait for MS to finally eliminate pirated software.
When people begin to realize what the stuff actually costs- they will begin to look for alternatives. This is the normal way of doing things. You don't like what something costs- you look for something that works just as well and doesn't cost as much.

This is already happing at the Federal, State and local Government level.(worldwide) They are moving to Open Source because they cannot afford to go w/MS and be legal.

Clamping down on piracy is the best thing microsoft could ever do for the open source movement.

i disagree MS does not make decent software while it works (technecally speaking) its is not stable or quality...

    >Who doesn't have Word or Excel? Not too many
    people.

count me among them i don't even have it installed...hehe...

Why poeple use MS products is beacuse YOU CANNOT BUY A COMPUTER WITH LINUX PREINSTALLED alomst anywhere!! MS owns all the markets people don't know there are alternatives, and if they do their afraid to use them since MS says their uncompatable, slow, hard to use, and nothing you've currently got will work on them, all of witch are completely untrue.

MS wins by fear... i agree Linux is not a viable alternative for all buisnesses but some could benefit...

i don't have a problem with people using MS they make good enough stuff to be used... I have a problem with their being no alternatives to MS, because MS tries to smash anything that competes... hence the Anti-Trust lawsuit goin on now... they offer incentives to and threaten companies that don't do everything they ask, this is wrong, their comparable to a bully... soon somebodys gonna knock the bully on his ass and hes gonna go home crying...hopefully very soon...

Microsoft will eliminate pirated software. We will begin to see this plan come to fruitation very soon because all the groundwork is set. This will be a big blow to Linux and a boon to Microsoft and its relationship with corporations seeking copyright security. New industries will fund initiatives to support .NET and software will become a service.
Even if MS does eliminate pirated software (an nigh-impossible task), how is this a blow to Linux? Software piracy only hurts companies that charge for their product, so Linux really isn't affected by it. As for software becoming a service - the day MS charges me monthly fees for Office is the day I switch to Linux. Likewise, the day I have to call Redmond and defend my right to upgrade MY hardware without purchasing a new operating system, is the day I forsake MS for good.

thats why we have Hackers to make cracks so you can change your hardware and don't have to pay monthly... LORD DO I LOVE HACKERS!!!

So you Know: the true meaning of the word "Hacker" is not someone who writes virsuses, trojans, worms, or otherwise a true hacker works for the people. a true hacker knows more about the software he hacks that the writers... a true hacker is a good thing... not someone who sets you up the bomb O why is their such confusion... true hackers will write cracks for the yearly leasing of win2k microsoft almost brought down on buisnesses a month ago but when told most buisness could not afford it they held back. whos knows for how long...

Actually, no-one, a hacker, by definition, is anyone who writes code (esp. obsessively)... 99% of the people here can be termed "hackers". The people you're talking about who write cracks are "crackers", not hackers.

True crackers will write code to steal Windows and other software. True hackers write the code in the first place. Sure, a cracker can go through with a hex editor or something and edit a few lines of code to get rid of the copy protection, but a hacker is the person that put those thousands and thousands (millions, in MS's case) of lines of code there in the first place.

Sure, you might think I've just changed my opinion within 5 minutes, but that's not true. I don't like MS's ideas about software subscriptions and the "feature" that keeps track of your hardware changes, but I respect the hell out of their programmers. You might say they produce lousy, bug-ridden code, but I challenge you to try to coordinate a job with that many people and get it to work at all, much less get it to work bug-free.

Everyone here makes mistakes in their code. Just the other day, gamegod made the simple error of forgetting a couple of chicken lips in his code. He's far from a programming genius or anything, but he's also far from being some clueless newbie. He writes good stuff, but just forgot a little detail. Now, magnify his couple hundred line program with one the size of Windows, factor in all the people writing it, and it's a miracle anything they write works, especially as well as it does.

Also, no-one, if you're going to continue to criticize everything MS does, stop using their products! Nobody's forcing you to, except for your own laziness and unwillingness to learn a new OS.

before anything else you said consider Apple their OS is more compatable faster more secure more stable and better than windows and its open source!!!!
HOW CAN THEY MANAGE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and why does MS still feel the need to rip of features from them??

    >Actually, no-one, a hacker, by definition, is anyone who writes code (esp. obsessively)... 99% of the people here can be termed "hackers". The people you're talking about who write cracks are "crackers", not hackers. <

i beg to differ... but i will spare an arguement...

    >but I respect the hell out of their programmers.

WHEN THE HELL DID I INSULT THEIR PROGRAMMERS OR WORKERS!!! I DIDNT EVER NOT ONCE!!! I DISLIKE THE BUISNESS PRACTICES AND MANAGEMENT!!! NO BODY THAT WORKS THERE IS RESPONSIBLE BUT THEM(the management an heads of the company)!!!

i to respect the workers... jeez man what do you think i am

    >You might say they produce lousy, bug-ridden code, but I challenge you to try to coordinate a job with that many people and get it to work at all, much less get it to work bug-free. <

many companies do far better(Apple) AND ITS NOT JUST MS!! why cant PC game companies be like Console game companies are YOU CANT PATCH A CONSOLE GAME!!!
so they write the best most bug free code there is WHY CAN GAME COMPANIES MEET THE SAME STANDARD OR AT LEAST TRY!!!!

    back to MS...
IM JUST SAYING THEY COULD IMPROVE IT A LITTLE IT GETS WORSE AND WORSE WITH THEM WITH EACH PASSING YEAR!!! AT LEAST SET A STANDARD!!LOOK AT APPLE LOOK AT THIER FRIGGEN OS ITS STABLE AND QUALITY!! ITS EVEN DOES MORE THAN WINDOWS!

    >Everyone here makes mistakes in their code. Just the other day, gamegod made the simple error of forgetting a couple of chicken lips in his code. He's far from a programming genius or anything, but he's also far from being some clueless newbie. He writes good stuff, but just forgot a little detail. . <

im by no means perfect i mae tons of bugs and errors...

    >Now, magnify his couple hundred line program with one the size of Windows, factor in all the people writing it, and it's a miracle anything they write works, especially as well as it does<

GIVE ME A FRIGGEN BREAK IT A MIRACLE ANYTHING WORKS DONT GIVE THEM ANY MORE BREAKS THAN YOU GIVE A GAME COMPANY WHEN THEY LEAVE A MASSIVE FRIGGEN BUG!! and yes their are games with a few million+ lines of code...

    >Also, no-one, if you're going to continue to criticize everything MS does, stop using their products! Nobody's forcing you to, except for your own laziness and unwillingness to learn a new OS.<

true enough but this is my problem thier products are not the best but thier there i other than being lazy need A READY DEVELOPEMENT PLATFORM!! Linux is incabable of meeting my current needs AND I DONT HAVE MONEY FOR A NEW COMPUTER!! AND I DONT HAVE AN ENORMOUS AMMOUNT OF TIME MOST DAYS and what i do have i use to relax cause im under a lot of stress!!

    please forgive all the caps....

Linux is not sold on computers because not enough people want them that way. That is why compaq has stopped offering Linux preinstalled- lack of demand. In fact if you want I can probably dig up a link on that.

I like linux but I don't think that it will ever have a large prescence on the desktop in anything resembling its current form.

It kicks but on servers and in embedded stuff but on the desktop it isn't doing well. It's way too much work for the average user.

My main point though- is that the more aggressive Microsoft gets on keeping people from pirating software, the harder people will look elsewhere.

This is great for what you want- options. The tighter MS squeezes, the more that slips through their fingers.

And my final thought- cracking and stealing software is not something to be glad about. If you like stuff to be free, use software that was meant to be free.
If someone works hard to write code and doesn't want to give it away, don't steal it from them.

And I'm reading ahead- but Govtcheez is write about the hacker/cracker deal.

And now I see that you are under a lot of stress. Well- take it easy. This stuff is nothing to get stressed about, that is for sure.
