    Board hierarchy suggestions

The design of the message board hierarchy has recently become a topic of discussion. Unfortunately, the previous thread seemed to be degenerating. In order to faciliate discussion, I'm opening up a new thread: what additions, modifications, or deletions would best help the message board?

All off-topic posts will be deleted.

We are supposed to be C programmers. There is no greater implementation langauge, however that's what C/C++ is, it's used for building systems. So lets create boards that point beginners and many old programmers in that direction.

The website has a C# programming board, however C# is no more related to C++ than VB.net or Java.

The Linux board is okay, but since there is a great lack of leadership on the moderator team, there is almost no open source development sytems or solutions being developed. I'm not sure that a Linux board is effective. Maybe it should be dismissed.

In computer science, generic study is pursued. This website does not represent real life development of technology. It is totally centered around loosly based concepts that are being taken advantage of by vendor advertising. There is not enough educational value being represented here.

You have to create a model. Dividing implementation and interface should be considered. Systems are a concept that should be differentiated from solutions. It would also be very nice to have an artificial intelligence board because that might start to invoke interest in generic studies, and things might get on track that way.

Why let people become misguided when you can educate them and get them on track with technological developments.

I think troll king may be on to something in the prevoius post about the board...

An AI section would be very interesting but, who would lead such an board? I don't think there are many if any AI axperts on this board (no offence to anyone)

as stated on the other thread, the only thing i see for the immediate moment is renaming the game programming forum, to Game/Graphics, or something the like to centralize those questions.

TK, whats your grand vision. (no sarcasm intended)

also, do you think the linux board should be working toward actually developments, or am i misunderstading?

Whatever you do, it's a big job to move from unrepresentational cprogramming to supporting the implementation of C in real life. To do this you need people generating their own systems and solutions. Nobody here is doing this.

With C you should be attempting to understand systems. It is a language that is used to build them.

You can change the board design if you want to stop getting overloaded with Microsoft advertising and get into real life C programming. It will pay off in the end. I'm sure that some programmers can even write books on the material here, but there is no way in hell that this is going to happen with the amateur programming that this website is currently endorcing -even ignorant programming.

    It should be develping systems.

    >It should be develping systems.

in what context/format/ maybe some implementation details?
excuse me for being dense, but i as im sure others are am having trouble grasping your meaning.

besides im not sure the intent of the site is to present a professional atmosphere, more of an (educational)resource?

The systems should be implemented in C/C++. One area that I find interesting is frameworks, however basically the first stop is learning about the implementaton of the operating system. From there compilers, libraries, frameworks, and other system can be built. There is nothing greater than open source if it is used to build systems. Nothing on this earth matches it.

This website never deals with concepts, for example, the concept of interfaces or implemenations, the concept of an operating system or a framework, or a distributed system. This simply does not happen here, and therefore how can any systems be developed?

    From the index...

Cprogramming.com is a web site designed to help you learn C or C++ and provide you with C and C++ programming resources
I think the main question is "what is the focus of cprogramming.com?"

    a) It is a place for newcomers to learn C/C++.
    b) It is a place where people can share ideas freely, as well as further their knowledge of C/C++.

It is a very narrow perspective to say that C/C++ programming is entirely system orientated. These are high-level languages, designed to be used for many types of applications.

I'm not trying to rubbish your ideas TK - I am saying however, that this should be a site where all types of C/C++ programming are encouraged.

There is a reality though. The reality is that C is approached differently on different operating systems. It's important to get with the program, and a revision of the topics will not prevent people from using C for high level programming. That is why I provided the topic: Solutions. That's what solutions are, they leverage systems through interfaces.

How about a C/C++ newbies board? Then we could have all "how do i clear the screen in dos", "hoew can i sto pmy progbramin it cllsoses tooop fast" in one central unit. Newbies helping newbies... it has its flaws, but there are many things going for this design. Other C/C++ boards could be used for intelligent conversations and questions among the smarter members.

Personally, I think the whole website needs a redesign. Everytime something new comes up, it seems its just patched on the existing website with a piece of tape, things are only getting worse.

The Board should not be the only thing to think about on this website. The FAQ needs to be moved off this board, combined with the other FAQ. Tutorials need to be fixed up. The new "contests" section is just messy... and it's not even listed on the side navigation

We could add "New to Cprogramming.com?" frontpage link/sections so people *might* see it and not just skip over to the forums and ask one of their half assed questions. If we all work together (the established community here) I think we can build a more newbie friendly website, and one for those who desire a more in-depth approach to programming.

    Board specific moderators. Enough said

Get rid/merge the Linux and DOS boards with the C/C++ boards... the questions asked in there are almost identical to those in the C/C++ boards, aside from a few platform specific questions. Whether you're programming in DOS or Linux, you're still using C/C++.

The Windows board is perfect how it is. The game board should be renamed to the Game/Graphics API board as others had suggested.

I'm sure i'm forgetting some ideas I previously had... i'll post back if I remember.

I've been on boards where all the mods seem to do is tell people "this thread should have been posted on the newbie board"
