I don't think there is an accurate answer to thius question.
do you mean how many female programmers access this board?
anyhow, programmers are programmers, software engineers, or whatever you want to call 'em.
as long as they are of big help, learn to respect them.
(and then there are the people that you shouldn't care about like me).
now, who cares if they are male or female?

and at the uni I go to, there is only a handfull of us females and the funny thing is, we are all pretty good at what we do....that is, programming and helping the guys program

Anyways, my thoughts on why girls don't like programming, or computers in general:
1. They don't like the future it depicts: Sitting around typing away at a computer, be it alone or next to a bunch of geeky smelly ugly hunch-backed computer nerd, the future looks grim.

2. females usually stick to the steriotype of being a housewife, however I have seen that those who choose to do something REALLY do it! If the girl becomes a programmer she doesn't just sit around a programming board 24/7 partaking in mindless conversations, she is instead out to become the best programmer she can be (and usually acheives it, it's just that most want to be housewives).

3. They are smarter, they don't wast time on boring message boards like the mindless men around them (I am Male, it's just that I spend a lot of time around females so I am wording it the way they would).

Can't really think of anything else to say.

I think there are both good female & male programmers.
There does seem to be more male programmers though.
Considering that 2 out of the last 5 instructors I sat in on
to critique were females & that most of the females in
the classes did well, I think female programmers will be
around for awhile

Yes I agree

When I develop programs, I often ask girls to evaluate the finished products and they tell me what to improve. I tend to be result-oriented in my approach (to the extent of sloppy coding sometimes) but my girls are the ones who suggest some program elegance. They are quite meticulous.
