    Fighting boredom at work

    Ummm. yah.

    Tell me how *gggg*

I'm a trainee in the "Provinzial" (a big German insurance company), more precisely in the data processing department.

I surf the web, have some private little c++ winapi coding practises *g* and stuff.... but that's not too interesting at all.

Anyone knows some good funny Webpages or other stuff I could deal with?

www.bored.com (although I don't find that site too interesting)

my solution is to sit and ring every extension in your office, one at a time... and only let it ring once, and then hangup. Once they get mad enough... let it ring til they pick up, yell an explitive, and hangup. rinse, repeat.

I've got a similar thing where I call another extension and ask to speak to myself. When the person who answers comes to tell me that I have a phone call, I tell them I'm on the phone and ask them to take a message for me. When they pick up the phone to take a message (from me, to me) I just tell them I'll call back later. Then I do call back...a lot.

If you're on a LAN, altering other peoples desktops is always good for a laugh. eg, altering the start menu, adding a few shortcuts to the desktop itself. You can even do things like close their apps, open cd draws and power down the pc.

Not that I condone this sort of behaviour in the workplace....

Well, where I work we will do any number of obvious non-work activities such as playing cards, and various contests where we build something and then race it down the hall. By far the most entertaining thing to do when bored is to come up with a near impossible problem and give it to the entry level programmers marked *URGENT!*. Then sit back and watch them run around all willy nilly trying to figure it out. Generally you can kill an hour or three just by doing something stupid like trying to throw floppies like a frisbee into a waste basket on the other side of the office.
