The Members List... [actual thread, non IP access]

Hmph! It's DA again here to remind you all that it's time to clean out the members list! More of the same statistics to convince you all to vote yes on this here poll...

which will help petition the web mahstah to clean it up!!!

take note, we have about 4760 members...

at least 90 percent of us have <= 30 posts...
at least 80 percent of us have <= 10 posts...
at least 70 percent of us have <= 5 posts...
at least 60 percent of us have <= 3 posts...
at least 50 percent of us have <= 2 posts...

43 percent of us have 1 post!
22 percent of us have 0 posts!

Granted, many have registered perhaps recently, and perhaps some of us are 'lurkers'... but for months upon months? [Quite frankly I would not like to be in such company!]

This is a very good idea. I think in this case we should adopt the method which MSN Gaming Zone used when they were cleaning up their membership database.

This is what MSN Gaming Zone did, and I think it would work well here too:

They deleted all usernames which had not logged in within the past 6 months.

This way it would not delete the lurkers who like to look around the boards but do not post very often.

However, there are some people who we might not want to delete. For example, there are some who might have used to be regulars here at the Cboard but have been absent for 6 months, but might come back some time.

I also know that many people would hesitate very much in the deletion of Sunlight's name...because he was very popular back on the old board.

So I propose that we make a list of all those we do not want to delete who have not logged on in 6 months, and then delete all others who have not logged on in 6 months.

This should, I hope, clean up the database quite a bit.

True. I think it'd be odd to have another sunlight roaming around...

Plus, what happens to the posts of the people we delete? Let's say we delete sunlight and someone takes the name up...then they pretty much have access to do what they please with his old posts?

what is the advantage of deleting names which have not posted or have not posted excessively? is there a problem with harddrive space on the server? unless there is, this is all pointless. they do not slow things down or anything.

Maybe the cause of so many on-posters is because they registered and then either didn't choose to come back or they had no way of deregistering for whatever reason. How about a time limit for new accounts where if it's unused for a certain amount of time/posts it gets automatically deleted? And an option to delete your account could help if cleaning up after yourself is encouraged. If you aren't coming back, kill your account so we can reuse the name or something.

why do we need to do this? it's not like cleaning out 3000+ names will make cprogramming.com feel any smaller.

on the other hand, so what? this will have a negligable impact on our daily lives, either way it goes.

As a matter of fact, no. I've pushed for the cleansing of the list ever since we've reached around a few hundred members. For a history of this, check out any of my posts on the old history board, or, in fact, the mod board.

It's not a matter or space nor time [stop being so programming minded... we struggle with that all the time, space and time ], it's a matter of cleanliness.

that could just get annoying. for example, hotmail deletes accounts that have not been logged into for 30 days...thats plain annoying...

I would say clean out anybody over two months old without any posts, and everyone who hasn't logged on in the last year. Send them an email notification first, though...

no; the way vbb works, the posts would have sunlights name on them but they'd be the same way as an unregistered person's posts.
