I wonder what would happen if they just came on the news one day and said that there was a 100% chance a global killer was going to hit in 30 days.

Do you think mankind would come together as a whole in the final hour of humanity as we know it? Wouldn't issues that we feel are so meaningful or important in our world just seem minuscule in seconds? You'll qaeda what? Saddam who?

One thing I can guarantee is that some large crowd of idiots would not only break into my favorite electronics store, but would actually be under the impression that they would own that VCR long enough to learn how to set the clock on it.

When I think about things like that it just makes me appreciate what I have now and reminds me that I should always live by being the best person that I can be in the moment.

Man will destory himself before an asteroid ever will. It is only a matter of time before western civilisation falls like every other civilisation. Only once this happens will people come together and realise that they are one in the same, and will start a true civilisation.

I think its great that you feel that way (no this isn't sarcasm). It is only once people accept their deaths that they can truly live. People have invented the notion of a tommorow in order to "forget" about death. They don't want to deal with it - they use emotions to justify the reasons for this. I used to do this as well until my eyes were opened up to the truth of our existence. There is really nothing to fear about death in the least. I accept my death - it is simply a part of life, evolution, nature. We never really die - we simply are pyschic energy that lives in two worlds (the living and the dead). We were never created, we will never be destroyed - we are immortal.

Who cares what his belief is based on? Making fun of someone's belief because you find it outragious or because you simply do not agree is sick, to say the least.

You've got to understand not everyone is boggled down with the need of scientific proof.

Really? I see, so if someone announced that they believed they were Napolean it would be "sick" to mock? If someone told you they they regularly held conversation with lampshades, it would still be "sick" to mock.

BAH, for some screwed up reason it's ok to mock certain irrational views, but not ok to mock other irrational views. Are you so TOTALLY blinded by social acceptability, that you cannot see through the hypocrisy of it all?

"You've got to understand not everyone is boggled down with the need of scientific proof."

Yes i know; people are fools, it sucks. But hey, all you can do is try and point stuff out, in the vague hope that there are people out there who can actually think straight.

The world needs people like me, we keep humanity sane (for the most part).

Bah, I won't go into it with you again, Clyde. I found out a long time ago it's impossible to defeat a wall.

Edit: Deleted most of post to avoid another winded argument with a wall of many sorts.

Okay, fine. I'll answer your somewhat rhetoric questions...

    >Really? I see, so if someone announced that they believed they were Napolean it would be "sick" to mock? If someone told you they they regularly held conversation with lampshades, it would still be "sick" to mock.<

Exactly. If you think the guy is insane (which he probably is), then that's entirely fine. But to make fun of the guy is plain mean. I'd never make fun of someone for their beliefs. If someone believes the world turns to ham when they look away, then okay. I think they're crazy, as will most people, but I won't make fun of them.

    >AH, for some screwed up reason it's ok to mock certain irrational views, but not ok to mock other irrational views.<

No. It's not okay to mock any person's view because you are not in their position. You don't know what they are percieving.

    >Are you so TOTALLY blinded by social acceptability, that you cannot see through the hypocrisy of it all?<

Although I'm a hipocrit (and man enough to admit it), I don't see how I'm comforming to hipocrisy here. Please enlighten me.

    >eh yes, i'm a wall because i'm rational uh-huh.<

No. You're a wall because you refuse to accept the possibility that you might be wrong and the other person might be right. You refuse to accept other people's opinions, views, and beliefs because you find them "ridiculous" and because you don't share them.

And because of that, the last thing the world needs is more people like you.

Sorry im in a ranting mood:

    [rant]
"Exactly. If you think the guy is insane (which he probably is), then that's entirely fine. But to make fun of the guy is plain mean."

Mean? There are bigger things at stake than "mean", we live in democratic world, that means that the beliefs held by the general population have a huge amount of power.

Of course i rubbish nonsensical beliefs where ever i can, if people think the Earth is flat i mock them, if people believe in psychic energy i mock them, if people believe in God/Gods i mock them, why? To try and keep the world SANE, to fight against the social conditioning that gets layed down into everyone, the very same social conditioning that is streaming out of your fingers onto this webpage.

Stupid ideas DESERVE to be mocked, otherwise people take them seriously!

"someone believes the world turns to ham when they look away, then okay. I think they're crazy, as will most people, but I won't make fun of them."

Then you risk people who don't know better believeing them.

Stupidity irritates me, it always has, people's utter inability to think straight and form valid conclusions, i look at the world around me, so MANY problems caused because people can't freaking think. So i fight it, i fight for logic, for clear thought, i fight for sanity, it would be nice if i didn't have to; if people didn't listen to nonsense about the world turning to ham, or about psychic powers, etc. but they DO, atleast they do unless you fight, so i fight.

"No. It's not okay to mock any person's view because you are not in their position. You don't know what they are percieving."

Their perception is not what im mocking, im mocking their inability to reason.

"Although I'm a hipocrit (and man enough to admit it), I don't see how I'm comforming to hipocrisy here. Please enlighten me. "

Merely that your post seemed to suggest i take what he was saying seriously, when other views that aren't socially acceptable its ok to not take seriously.

Anyway you cannot seriously tell me you wouldn't mock someone who said they talk to lamp shades, i don't mean to their face i mean to your friends, you might pass off a quiet "nutter", etc. BUT as soon as its done to one of the golden "beliefs", then its a completly different ball game.

"No. You're a wall because you refuse to accept the possibility that you might be wrong and the other person might be right"

Might does not interest me, rationality does, logic does, anything "might" be true or untrue, what matters is not possibility but probability.

I accept there "might" be psychic powers, there "might" be talking lampshades, the world "might" turn to ham when i turn around, there "might" be a giant invisable elephant floating above my head.......... BUT belief in those things is irrational, and irrational beliefs are almost always wrong. My argument is with the thought process BEHIND the belief, that is what interests me.

". You refuse to accept other people's opinions, views, and beliefs because you find them "ridiculous" and because you don't share them"

Nonsense, i accept people's opinions IF they are logical, unflawed opinions. In fact this is another example of your own hypocrisy because you too will reject other opinions as ridiculous if they are irrational as LONG as they don't go against social acceptability.

Someone who thinks the Earth is flat, would you not deem that ridiculous........ well you've painted yourself into a corner now, so perhaps you will say no.....

"And because of that, the last thing the world needs is more people like you."

Of course you believe that, because your spider sense is saying "evil man" "evil man", because i'm going directly against stuff thats handed down as "conventional wisdom" and thats been borred into your brain since you were a kid, you see unlike many people I THOUGHT about everything, absolutely everything, and so i don't accept "conventional wisdom" just because its socially acceptable, the fact is a whole chunk of it is BOLLOCKS, for example, you go out onto the street and you ask people what they think of genetic modification of crops, what do they say? Do they say "Well i feel the risks of gene transfer from GM crops into bacteria in the gut merits concern", do they say "GE offers enormous potential for growing crops in poor soil", do they say "I have concerns about the ethics or the large biotech companies involved" heck do they even say "sorry, i don't have enough info to form a valid conclusion" HELL NO what they freaking say is "Man shouldn't mess with nature, because messing with nature is unnatural and bad", or some such DRIVEL, why? Because thats convential wisdom, thats the socially acceptable answer. And its BS. Do you know what happened when the victorian doctors first started researching into the possibility of organ transplants? Public OUTCRY, "unnatural, bad, evil, blah, blah, blah", AGAIN conventional wisdom, social acceptability.

    So SCREW social acceptability.

Respect people beliefs, no matter what they are? My girl friend gets stoned and tells me that the elves are coming to get her and i should "respect" her belief? Maybe psychiatrists shouldn't freaking bother treating mentally ill patients because that constitues DENYING and hence "disrespecting" their "beliefs".

I don't harm this world, by preaching sense, sure i ........ off a few people, but people like me mean that organ transplants didnt get thrown out as "unnatural and bad", people like me fight against the kind of beliefs that fuel conflicts like Israel, people like me promote education. In the future people will look back on the irrational beliefs of today, just as we look back on the irrational beliefs of thousands of years ago, as amusing oddities, why? Because of people like me.

Your thinking leads us STRAIGHT back to the dark ages, chuck away rationality, chuck away logic, obey social conditioning and THATS where you end up.
    [/rant]

Ok so i'm being somewhat overly harsh here, but im tired, and i have to constantly defend my stance, because it clashes with what is traditionally viewed as the "right" opinion to have. I really wish people could think straight, but its rare, of course IF social acceptability promotes the SAME opinions as the onces dictated by rrational then we have no problem and gradually that does happen, but the reason it happens is because people PUSH, i'm one of the pushers.

i was going to do a point by point reply of your post, but there's little need. it sums up to this.

The world is fine without a constant mocking of opinions.

the belief that the world is flat has changed since the middle ages. back then you might have been imprisoned or worse for speaking such a thing. nowadays, you're passed off as an idiot. what has changed?

our society is more tolerant of beliefs, no matter how insane they may seem. human beings have learned not to place too much importance in the beliefs of one person.

it is impossible to use a persons beliefs to predict what they will do. most often, a belief is a very general and harmless thing. so why should someone try to convince other people that what they believe is nonsense?

"The world is fine without a constant mocking of opinions"

Then why are is new age nonsense booming? why do people go to faith healers and die, instead of going to hospital? Why does the public constantly hold back medical advancement? Why do people kill each other over their "beliefs"? And on, and on......

The world is most certainly not "fine".

"the belief that the world is flat has changed since the middle ages. back then you might have been imprisoned or worse for speaking such a thing. nowadays, you're passed off as an idiot. what has changed? "

Right, and the trend is continuing, because people are pushing.

"our society is more tolerant of beliefs, no matter how insane they may seem. human beings have learned not to place too much importance in the beliefs of one person."

Tolerance is one thing, respect is another. Im not going to kill anyone for believing foolish things, but i am going to point out the folly.

"it is impossible to use a persons beliefs to predict what they will do."

In a specific case you are correct, but in general case you are most certainly not, irrational beliefs cause the propogation of many of the worlds problems.

"so why should someone try to convince other people that what they believe is nonsense?"

Because their beliefs have impact, if they were harmless all would be fine and dandy, but they are not. We live in a democratic world (mostly), that means people's beliefs impact political decisions in a big way. Politics aside, people's beliefs have a tremendous impact on how they live:

People DIE in Africa because they believe AIDS is a curse, and because ****ing Catholics tell them that contraception is a ****ing sin: Beliefs MATTER.
