Thread: Odd solution to an odd problem

Hey guys,
I just got an AMD Athlon 1500+ XP with GB 7DX+ board (built-in sound)...

I was facing two problems with it :

1. Overheating (it was giving about 72C at 1000 Mhz and 80C at 1333 Mhz)

2. Sound device couldn't be detected...

I took the system over to the hardware guy (under warantee), the sound was still not being detected. Then, he unscrewed the motherboard and got it out of the case...guess what ? now the sound was detected..

We figured out that the problem was due to false "EARTHING"...

So he place a sponge sheet under the board and "screwed" it up with plastic screws...now it works just fine...it is at 64C at 1000 Mhz and about 72 at 1333 Mhz...and the sound is being detected just fine tooooo....

NOW IM HAPPY...

Glad to hear you solved the grounding problem with the sound, but your CPU temp still seems high. My 1200 Athlon runs at mid 50s. I'd still say you need some cooling solutions added.

CPU Temp 43 C / 109 F
System Temp 31 C / 87 F
CPU fan speed varies between 5200 rpm and 5400 rpm.

Based on this I'd say that there is still a problem with your setup. Maybe you need a larger case. My hardware case is quite large.

The case is there to improve airflow. Taking the cover off actually reduces the airflow, thus causing the computer to overheat more easily. Unless of course you keep your house very, very cold

i used to have my motherboard laying on top of my old computer case. i used that sponge padding to keep it from contacting metal. i was too cheap to actually buy the new case the motherboard required... i just used my old case to keep it a foot off my floor, piling my cdrom/hard drives in there somewhere, and leaving my power supply upright so i could actually unplug it when i needed to turn it off. safe? no way. but it worked until i saved enough to buy a atx case.
