    Finally got my new computer

    hey...
We've just bought the new Athlon 1500+.

Q1 : It is showing 1010Mhz at the startup ? why ??? i checked the packing of the CPU. It is 1500+

Q2 : The temperature at which the CPU is getting to at the initial startup is 71 C, at which it is stable until i remain in the BIOS Setup. Is it normal ?

Q3 : My motherboard is GB 7DX+. It isn't recognizing the soundcard (built-in) ???? any suggestions...

I've initially installed Win98. and now i'm just going to do WinXP 2000

The 1500+ isn't actually the speed of the chip. I believe AMD uses it as a tool to compare to a P4 of the same number, ie your Athlon 1500 is the same speed as a P4 1500Mhz.

WHOA... that's a little high... I think you have some heating problems... did you install a heatsink and use the thermal paste between it and the processor??

I'm usually running around 60 degrees celsius, and even that is a bit high.

And I think that also is affecting your clock speed... because while cheez is right about the AMD numbering scheme, I think the 1500+ should be higher than that... that's lower than my Tbird 1.2Ghz!!

as for the sound card problem, make sure you have a win2k driver... I don't think it has anything to do with the mobo.

Here is a list of AMD's rating system:

Processor and Model Number/Core Operating Frequency
    AMD Athlon™ XP 1500+/1.33 GHz
    AMD Athlon™ XP 1600+/1.40 GHz
    AMD Athlon™ XP 1700+/1.47 GHz
    AMD Athlon™ XP 1800+/1.53 GHz

You may want to check the jumper settings on the motherboard if you're getting low numbers, just to make sure they're set properly.

That's a bit high, even for AMD, I'd look into some cooling options; maybe a case fan or two (make sure some are blowing air in and some are blowing air out).

    >> Q3 : My motherboard is GB 7DX+. It isn't recognizing the soundcard (built-in) ???? any suggestions... <<

Could just be disabled. Check the BIOS.

Yes, I have checking in the setup. The build-in sound system is enabled ? Does anyone else have the same system ?

As for the clock speed, I can almost guarentee the bus speed is wrong.

266 (what bus should be) / 200 (what bus is) ~ 1333 (what speed should be) / 1010 (what speed is)

70C, like has been said before, is hot. Did you put the fan on yourself?

Exactly correct...Doh, I had my jumpers set incorrectly at first, and it showed 1GHZ or something instead of 1700.

Mine never pops over 49 degrees, with only 1 case fan and a sink rated higher speed than the chip...something weird on yours

I checked the BIOS Setup, and i can now set te speed to 1.33 Ghz, but at this speed the temperature is shooting up to 78-79 C.

At 1.0 Ghz the temperature is almost stable at 72-73 C (i ran the system for about 3.5 hours.

No, the hardware guy installed the fan... Although there was no gel involved. The fan has a thick sticker type of thing at the base (which has the req. chemical)...

Maybe you need a new motherboard more suited for your chip. Some of them will only display a maximum speed, even if your chip is faster.

it sounds like the guy at the hardware store didn't know what he was doing.... you MUST have thermal compound with AMD processors... otherwise you can run into major problems. I don't think it's your mobo.. i think you're cooling sucks. You might want to consider a new cpu fan too... sounds like it doesn't quite cut it either.

    Yep, you must.

When i did mine (XP1900) i bought a sink rated up to 2ghz....mine will run at 1700 so i am ok..

GET the gel, or the sink will be worthless, as the heat will not be transferred away from the cpu-even if it is in contact with it.

READ the mobo instruction book--chances are it will be in some incomprehensible lingo, but read it.

Check jumpers after reading manual, you will need to ensure the bus speeds are supported etc.

You are reporting different speeds-it will be one or the other, for the two bus/jumper settings--nothing else..

70? wow thats hot-As i said, 49 the norm for me with just 1 fan and a big sink...and my room gets v v hot.

I'm using the fan that came with the chip.. no thermal compound, just sticky stuff on the bottom. I have no case fans, and my chip is constant at around 30-35C, I've had it running for at least 2 weeks before. Mind you, it's only a 900mhz.
