Where'd you read that? Sounds kinda optimistic, if not just because you'd be a total fool to use Java for anything besides a web app.

I can't remember where I read that... I think it was on slashdot when the first beta versions were coming out and people were b1tching about it not being there.
Personally, I don't know why anyone would use it beyond, like you said, a web app. And even then, why bother? There's better options available.
The psuedo-platform independance is nice, tho. Plus, I have to use it for a class, so I guess I can't hate it too vehemently.

I think that M$ is not supplying th vm with its new OS's. As far as I know this was decided with sun's consent. When you try run an applet, you will have a choice of downloading suns vm or another from M$.....It just wont be on the disk......

True..its not too good as apps. Applets have limited appeal, but servlets rule!!!!!!!!!!

It was recommended under the new curriculum - Java 1 and 2...
Woulda rather taken Pascal and Sys Prog Con w/ C, but it's too late now...

With java for servlets, you get a language that is close to C/C++ that you can use for loads of stuff...
JDBC makes it easy to work with remote databases....Thread control.....Sockets......
I love working with it....
I just created an anonymous emailer that allows you to send emails without supplying your email address....didnt even take much code...4 Classes.....
The only ***** is the cost of hosting.....I am using a free host at the mo, but it gets really slow at times.....
I read about Java overtaking C/C++ at www.programmersheaven.com in an article. I don't believe it, though. Well, at least it won't in my programming world. That's for sure.
Fordy, I respect your opinion, but do you think that Java can actually have the power to overcome C/C++? Especially with apps. I understand that this age is getting big with the internet, and that's what I thought could've been the Java influence, but it will still never even get close to C/C++. Never!

Govt - yeah, you got screwed on that one. I just got done taking Sys Con with C and I already had Pascal under my belt... so I don't have ot take any Java... WOOHOO!

My memory is kinda foggy on the details but I think that Sun's lawers stop MS from developing there JVM so the version that is available from MS is old..really old. Stupid move from Sun. I think it was a disagrement over the java standard. Sun claims java is an open standard as long as they can decide where it will go. I think thats when MS decided to go there own way with .NET and C#. SO basicly what all this means is that Java is a closed door for MS and they will not develop, support or document anything that have anything to do with it. And look how Java is going down the drain..*SLUURP*
