i wan't security. built from the ground up around cryptopgrahy. i don't want to have applications that layer over the OS. i want the guts to already have it.
i also want standards... for everything. portabilty among architecture is also important.
NetBSD is my OS of choice. (http://www.netbsd.org/)
i restate:
a browser that is,
A. Not integrated into the OS
B. Allows the disabling of pop-ups(heh)
telnet, std windows network stuff such as ping, tracert, ect...
an enablable FTP server and the like...

I don't know really. I can't think of anything more you'd need that's not already in most OSes.
1. Low system requiments
2. Windows Drive desgnation- C:\
3. Sercuity
4. Tons of features that are chosen to be instaled or not instaled.
5. Networking
6. A basic compiler (I see no need for a C++ compiler just something for the people to get intrduced to programming)

What do I want in an OS? Hmm...that's easy.
Just take BeOS, then give it 800% more hardware support (drivers and such), and back it with a company or organization that will care for it.
No support for DLL's (evil, useless conceptions) would be another plus also.
These are the high points:
Full GUI boot in <10 seconds.
Multimedia support for every format there is.
SMP (Multiple processors) support.
64-bit Journaled FS similar if not identical to the BFS.
100% Stability. The kind Windows can't even dream about.
User-friendliness.
Excellent System API.
Those are the things I would like to see more of in OS's.
Also, I'd like to be able to watch 8+ full length MPG's simeltaneously without glitches or system instability on a PII 266. Don't say it can't be done, I can convey otherwise
More diversity in the market. Right now the choice is Microsoft or Microsoft. I would like a more secure operating system and I think they have a long way to go. Current OS's are not secure. It would be great if the client server architecture could be as secure and stable as the mainframe architecture. I don't like the hastle of buying a new OS and worrying about whether or not it will even work with my hardware. They need to stop the terrorists and get rid of product activation.

Yes! That is the best thing I have read this entire day....I totally and utterly agree with you. The BSOD (an abbreviation used for it quite often around here) is the worst thing an OS can have...Three words....No Blue Screens that is all i ask

I would like:
-Stability
-Security
-Ease of use
-Efficient. frees up memory well.
-Support for lots of programs. It would be cool if it could support Windows, Linux, Mac, etc. totally without having to use any shells or anything...
-internet browser not integrated like internet explorer is with windows (although i must say i sure do like IE 6...netscape has always been my favorite though, and will continue to be my favorite).
All in all, Windows XP satisfies me...havent stalled once...which is something new...runs efficiently...so much better than 95...
I've heard great things about XP (compared to previous versions of Windows). Some other BeOS freaks are telling me that it is very close to getting a competition with BeOS. I've never used it myself. David, is it worth the money?

Since you tried Win2k Hillbillie, I'd imagine that you know about XP already. The only question is about the .NET framework which nobody seems to talk about. This is a 'fundamental' change. Basically XP is thowing itself at the internet for good or bad.

I can't think of anything else right now. OS's are stable. People are not.
