Is EXTRA THERMAL SOLUTION must for AMD ?

    Hey,

I'll be going to the market to get a new AMD this week. My question is: Is an additional thermal solution necessary for AMD ? The temperature of my room, on the average is about 30-35 °C (i think)... or does AMD systems come with enough built-in thermal solution...

Do I need something extra? Yes ? What ?

    What do I tell the shop-keeper ?

I had the worst nightmare...Pictures showing AMD vs. INTEL thermal management

P.S. : Is AMD capable of running all the software products that P-IV does ? e.g. Linux ?

Keep those AMD's as cool as possible! As you could see from the pictures, they don't like heat. Even a improperly mounted heatsink can fry them.

As for compatiblity, it should be 100% compatible with Intel, but I could be wrong about that.

it depends on the amd chip. generally, they create huge mounds of heat that need cooling. i have just a normal fan and heat-sink combo in mine. it works ok. (btw, mine is a athlon 1g.)

as for compatability, beyond motherboard concerns, you're in the clear. unless your application needs something like sse2, which very few do (and those progs probably have an option to turn it off, anyway), you should be fine.

    howdy,
my Athlon 750 runs just fine except i had to add an extra fan on the cpu heat sink and add another fan in the case.
i havent fried mine but a couple of time a year it lets me know its time to blow out the heat sink and vents by going unstable and doing odd things.
as for linux i have an ASUS k7m MB and have run both mandrake and presently RH with no problems.

I told the shopkeeper what thermal solution he'd be installing. He showed me a packet in which a fan was enclosed. He said that the fan is made by AMD itself (the packet had AMD Athlon, written on it). He told me that it is good enuff .

Well AMD beats Intel.. for several reasons.. But the new 2.2 Ghz of Intel beats AMD.. SO decide which one u r gona go for.. And go for a good heatsick.. The ASUS heat sink though expensive is very good.. And i would sugest an ASUS motherboard for the AMD processor.. SOme ASUS boards have GeForce Graphics chipset... So look for it..

    >30-35 °C (i think)

hm is that so? that's pretty hot... 86 to 95 eh? Room temperature in Celcius is about 22 or 23 degrees... and i have an AMD, and it's running fine and cool in the morning hours, but later on it's warming up alot, so... i feel your uncertainty... and if those are your real temperatures in your room, not only do i recommend more case and cpu cooling, but also some room cooling as well!

hh and that first link is very scary, do i need to take any measures to prevent any problems like this? like adding adhesive perhaps? or perhaps even replacing my _stock_ fan? thanks.

    hwdy,
hey DA i use that heat conductive white stuff, but the hardware guru at Cyber Wolf told me to use just enough to cover and no more, "Too much will actually act as insulation between the proc and the heat sink"
i think my athlon 750 is probably living on the edge so i had to get a heat sink on the proc with 2 fans, this i might add was not real clean to install. i ran into realestate problems inside of the box. now as long as i keep the vents clean on the sides of my box and keep the A/C on it stays stable.

This might be interesting to you guys (though its a little off-topic), when i worked in a computer shop i found a problem with this CPU fan that the owner of the shop had bought to use in his systems. It had a silly sticky thing on the bottom which was suppost to ensure heat transaction between the CPU and the Heatsink, however after a few systems where build using this fan we found many of them where returned due to them freezing after a few hours. When i removed the sticky thing they would run forever (ok slightly too far but nevermind) without a problem. Of course at the time i wasnt on best terms with the owner of the shop so i didnt tell him about it!

I have two AMDs with 4 fans and my comp constantly overheats and dies out after about six hours of running

    Ho hum..........

I run an 1900XP AMD as sweetly as you can do...

I just have a heatsink (bought the one rated for 2ghz) and a case fan.

Temp sneaks up to 47 degrees on occasion, never slows and my room is HOT.

The thermal gel IS essential (did mine myself) as this does conduct the heat into the sink.................

However, follow the instructions for the level of gel to use....as stated above, this will make matters worse if you use too much.

You should have no problems at all, never mind what the previous posts say..the guy with 2 AMD chips either works for intel(they do NEED help to keep up after all!) or he runs his in the sauna!

Its all fun isnt it? Buy the AMD and have fun!

oh yeh, have to add to the previous posts....it packs up after 6 hrs of running....dont you find that a bit weird...why not pack up after 2 hrs...how long do you think it takes to heat up so high?

    howdy,
i agree with Fountain, buy an AMD and don't worry about it.

I've been running an AMD chip with stock fan for the last two years. No seriously, two years straight. Its never been turned off. ... Rebooted a couple gazillion times but never actually turned off and left. So I'd have to say they work out just fine.

wow l@d... let's see that's a... 17520-hour burn-in test? which chip was that? is the server application intensive or do you have the extra bandwidth to ease the processor load. [ie dispersing it to client systems...]?

oh and it should be noted that so far so good. i think it was just probably that that adhesive stuff needed to get settled in i guess right?
