I'll be getting a new AMD Athlon 1500+ XP, i already have a Cyrix 6x86. I'm also buying two LAN cards, so that i can establish a network b/w my systems.
Any good tutorials ?

yes you can.... Well i would sugest you use softwares like Radmin, Laplink etc etc as you can controll the other PC with one PC itself..
you should try a ethernet card, i think it's the best one out there. and the card it self is not that expensive either. but the other hardwares can cost more. but for a 10 to 100 mps transfer, i think it's worth it!
good luck.
Thanks guys...
I already asked the guy at the shop for the price of a LAN card. It's pretty cheap. I don't know if it's an ethernet card...(Price = Rs. 350 = 5.5 $ for one)
So, when i get two of these LAN cards, and install them on the systems, do i have to get a separate CABLE to connect the systems ? or will the CABLE come with the cards ?
and I suppose, that when i set everything up properly... i.e. connect them with the cables, Windows (WinXP on Athlon and Win98 on Cyrix) will automatically detect the cards and automatically install the drivers, which i presume will be on a disk provided with the cards ? Right ? Then I should be able to play Need For Speed on my LAN without any other overheads ?
Cables do not come with most cards. Were you planning on buying a hub and putting more computers on the LAN later? If it will just be your two computers just buy a cross-over cable that goes directly between the two computers and you will be fine. Hopefully your OS will auto-detect the cards and you can use the driver disk that came with your NIC to install the correct drivers. Good luck with your project, its not so bad.Originally posted by Zeeshan

Two PC's can be connected by a cross over cable (different to a standard network cable), more need a hub (and standard cables).
Use a TCP/IP protocol, remove the others bound to the network card,
ensure a shared folder on both (and 'file sharing' has been removed from any TCP/IP that is bound to a modem / internet connection)
specify an IP address for the cards TCP/IP protocol (192.168.0.XXX is local network IP only, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 is standard) You can have your modem 'getting' an IP from your ISP and the network card specifing it address without problems.
To test a PC's network card is working use 'ping 192.168.0.XXX' from the DOS prompt (will work on the PC's own card).
WIN98 will need some time to find all the PC's on the LAN and may need a restart if the others drop off.

Ugh, I tried this crossover cable method... wasted about 18 hours straight trying to get it to work. I was so mad, I didn't get over it for a few days.
Now my other PC just sits in the closet next to my burnt out one... until I can find a cheap way to get the internet on it.

Have you tried ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) built into some of the windows versions?Originally posted by Dual-Catfish
