    Smile My favourite operating system

My favourite operating system is Windows 98 because it is easy to use, fast, stable, has the MS-DOS prompt unlike Windows ME and is ideal for my website designing and computer programming. I would say that the best operating system is the one that suits your needs and can do what you want it to do and I say stick with Windows or the MACos but not Linux. I say this because the stupid Linux programmers have made it too hard for the average user so I say stick with an easy to use operating system.

    >My favourite operating system is Windows 98

    I like Windows XP

    >because it is easy to use, fast, stable, has the MS-DOS prompt

ummm...98? stable? heh heh....i guess it is more stable than 95...but if you want stable, go for 2k or XP...not any of the 9x series (which includes ME).

    > would say that the best operating system is the one that suits your needs and can do what you want it to do

true...and if 98 is that for you...then stick with it...

but if u ask me...i'd say get a copy of XP. its awesome.

    >stick with Windows or the MACos but not Linux.

you're askin for a war...there are many Linux supporters here. And Mac? heh heh...yeah...riiiiiiiggghhttt....

    >Linux programmers have made it too hard for the average user

thats why Windows is doing so much better...average users like it. I have never used Linux before, so I wouldnt know what it is like. But I know it is a command-line OS....just learn the controls and you got it...not that hard....

I see that you also like the Windows os aswell. I myself am actually after Windows XP full version but it has not been released in the UK yet . I do know that what I said could be a bit insulting to all of those Linux supporters out there but I personally think that the programmers that designed the Linux operating system should listen to what people have to say and make it more easier and that is why Windows is so successful because anyone can use it and is very easy to use.

Linux is also not just a command line operating system: it also has a graphical user interface like Windows but the difference is that there are different desktops available like KDE and GNOME.

Its not easy to say Linux or Windows are better than the other.

Tru Linux is not as user friendly as windows, but you will find that ease of use is not so much of a priority with its core users.

hasnt been released here in the US either...I got it the other way....some might scold me for doing that....but i think i kind of needed it. Windows 95 was stalling on me 3 times a day, if not more. Within 10 minutes, 50% of my resources would be used up. Within 2 hours, if i had not stalled by then, i would probably have to reboot because of low resources. Win95 is pathetic...
and yes it was 95, not my comp...my comp has 128 MB or RAM and a 300 Mhz processor, and a 8 GB hd, so it was Windows 95...not the comp...so people, dont hate me for getting XP the way I did and when I did.

    David, do you use MSVC?

it does not release it memory after a compile and will eat up sys resources each time you compile till the com crashes.

    > Within 10 minutes, 50% of my resources would be used up

    what were you running?!!?

    >David, do you use MSVC?

i occasionally use MSVC, but not much. I only use it when I work on DX, and I only do that about once a week at home, i usually work on DX at school.

    >what were you running?!!?

AOL Instant Messenger, Netscape, and my ISP.

    thats all.

the computers resources would just gradually lower...however, with XP...I have NEVER seen the comp use more than 20% resources at a time....so efficient...I love it.

Where have you got this information from. I just recompiled (selecting rebuild all) a project with the win2k task manager open five times and everytime it finished the memory was released.

Win 98 is not even remotely stable. I program at work using purely MS products and use NT Workstation because I would crash 98 at least 3 or 4 times a day.

I do very much like NT.

Linux is not hard to use. It can be a bit difficult to install some distros but much of that has been resolved. Once it is on the machine, it can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be.

That is the beauty of Linux. You are in control. You decide what will be done and how. Not someone in Redmond.

I'm not going to do a linux vs. ms thing-- I like both. But it is a real cop out to say "I don't like Linux- it's too hard". It's not that difficult.

And apple may have a great OS- but I'll never own one, neither will most people. Their hardware is too expensive, they are too proprietary and they let themselves get pushed out by stupid marketing. Apple is a good example of how the better product can very easily lose by making bad choices.
He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep in order to gain what he cannot lose.

I work in the arts (that doent mean I am an artist).

Most people involved with artistic design on a computer opt for Macs. I would like to have a go on a mac, but looking at the prices that will never happen. God I could build 2-3 PCs for the price of a Mac......
