    "Switch"

Ive been looking at the 'Switch' section of the apple.com website and it looks cool to switch from a pc to a mac. I'm getting a new computer at the end of the year, but I'll still keep the old one (my computer is shared between myself and my two sisters and I want one to myself). I'd need to buy a router to share the cable modem and I dont think I could network them...What do you think?

If you're a student, I would strong recommend NOT buying a MAC. Most professional software that a student is supposed to learn are PC based. e.g. Microsoft Visual Studio and most GOOD versions of Linux....

MACS in my opinion are for just "Computer Users". Those who just use their computers to watch movies and listen to music and chat and browse and write "essays"... It is b/c MACs are considered to be a whole lot user friendly then PCs....

But, still there not very good for programmers like you and me...

I agree that most of what you will learn in school is PC based...BUT Macs are good for everything PCs can do and more. One major drawback for the average student is that tend to be a bit more pricey. Otherwise, because of OS X, Macs will start to become a stronger tool. (As long as the computer industry at large picks up the pace.)

There are also various compilers available for Macs!

Well considering the Mac OS is similar to UNIX now (lots of FreeBSD parts), you could use a UNIX OS as well, and I believe they are still RISC architecture, they should be much faster and more powerful than PCs. If you do anything with multimedia it's highly recommended that you get a Mac (audio or visual epecially). Entire recording studios are build with Macs now (known as Protools studios) and just about every graphics person I know owns one. I've thought about converting but I think I'll wait a while. It is much tougher to get software for Macs (especially games) but I guess it depends on what you want to do in the future. And with it coming closer to UNIX more software will be able to be ported.
Another downside is that you really can't upgrade them like you could a PC. It would probably be best to buy a PC but I think Macs might make a small come back with the new OS. A few years ago I would've told you you're an idiot for thinking about a Mac.

I refuse to buy a computer where to remove a disquette from the drive slot you have to drag the disquette icon to the.... believe it, trash can icon.

But my honest opinion, if you plan on switching, switch to Linux. Don't switch the hardware... there's simply to much to care for and you will only have a clear picture of the changes after you spent your money. Switching OSes is much like getting a new machine and it's cheaper. Besides, an Apple website talking about the advantages of switching to Mac is not the best place to look for informative opinions.

If you still decide on a Mac, there will be no problem networking your PC to it. AppleTalk (I believe that's the name) and LAN TCP/IP based PC can be networked together with the help of special software... PCMacLan is one of them.

It looks cool because you're reading about it from

    > the 'Switch' section of the apple.com website

The only way I'd buy a Mac is if I decided to become an animator or artist. Or maybe a composer.
