Java the backbone of web-industry ?

Ok, I participated in a software competition & exhibition. There were this bunch of programming students, who asked me why I hadn't built my software in Java (i wrote it in VC++ 6).

Then, we started discussing JAVA - yea right!

They said that Java forms the backbone of the internet, which i think is not the true.

So, would guys give me your opinion. Has java actually become such a crucial part of the web ?

I would venture to say that you can call TCP/IP the backbone of the internet. Java is important but to call it a backbone is to give it to much credit. Although Java is much more important then C is for the internet.

Sure... after all, if we didn't have Java, then we wouldn't have Yahoo Graffitti, which is, my friends, the backbone of the internet.

Really, 'backbone of the internet' is a bit broad. It would probably be more appripriate to say that the internet is the backbone of Java.
