Internet Explorer - Door to troubles

I was reading a site dedicated to security vunrubilites. It lists the holes that some applications have that allow hacks and/or viruses to cause havoc....With each weakness it offers a remedy and this was on one of them that descriped a way for HTML running on Internet Explorer to execute files on a local computer.....

"....Better, do not use IE in hostile environments such as the internet."
    Made me laugh!

There was something on /. yesterday about that the fundamental design of IE is flawed, that they can patch it forever and it will stil not be safe and that most patches actually opening up new holes. I will post the link if I can find it. 95% of the time I am using Opera and I think it is great.Esp the popup window blocking.

I dont think its IE so much, but more the gaping hole called ActiveX............

Almost every Outlook/IE problem has its roots in some small vunrability thats exposed by ActiveX........They state that stuff is "safe for scripting"....but only untill some smartarse finds another gap!!!

I use Opera too.......It has a few faults......but they are less known and less of a target....

    >>"....Better, do not use IE in hostile environments such as the internet."

LMAO! I'm gonna keep that quote. Whats that URL? I've always said that IE is the latest greatest virus recieving software available (next to Outlook Express). .... And people that use both ... *shudder*

    >>I dont think its IE so much, but more the gaping hole called ActiveX............

True. But there are a lot of IE _specific_ viruses that have nothing whatsoever to do with ActiveX.

    >>"safe for scripting"

Ah, yes. Of course. Nothing could possibly go wrong allowing alien scripts to be run on your system at any point and w/out your knowledge. What could be safer? Raw Sockets perhaps?

I have code which will allow programs be executed on your computer... it's pretty basic, but relies on knowing the directory the file is in. IMO, IE is alright for browsing... you can bash it all you want but it still serves its purpose.

The popup window blocking is awsome, but also, it's the possiblilites to open links in new pages and/or in new windows. So that you can organize the sites you're viewing.
Another nice "gadget" is the function to duplicate the window you're viewing. Because it duplicates its history as well.
If you use a modem conection, it'll go a lot faster than using IE.
When you download files, it'll let you stop and resume later.
I guess I should stop by now.

P.D.: I really thanks Fordy, because once I asked him what to do to get a faster modem conection. He told me to use a real browser, and here I am.........

just disable the coding in the security options in IE.
I heard Opera is good as a shareware.

Has anyone noticed that all MS software is a piece of ****?? Linux is the way, no doubt about it
    OS: Linux Mandrake 9.0
    Compiler: gcc-3.2
    Languages: C, C++, Java

If you go flying back through time and you see somebody else flying forward into the future, it's probably best to avoid eye contact.

No thats not true. There is nothing matching up to VS. Most of ms have security issues but they all are work well. Linux is nice but most of MS apps are ahead when it comes to usability

What do you mean exactly by usability? Linux apps are just as usable then MS apps it you ask me.

Well this will come down to personal preferences but this is why I think win apps are easier to deal with.

    *Uniform layout
*Logical organisation. Linux have computer management stuff scattered all over the menus
*I am used to the way win works. I am lost when I get into Linux. That isn't linux fault but thats the reality I live with.

Now I also have a list about really bad things about windows. I refere to ongoing thread at flashdaddee for that. I use and like both OSes and I thing the debate about what is best is getting really old and doesn't do any good for anyone. Use what you like and let people use what they like. Neither one is bad, neither one is perfect

I would say that Linux has a logical layout and is easy to use once you get used to it. But anyways, I've had windows since forever and I'm very familiar with everything about it. The switch to Linux took a while of getting used to but now I love it. I dread having to boot ME. It locks up consistently especially after installing OfficeXP. Just about every time I boot up my computer something "stops responding" and I have to ctrl+alt+del it. It gets annoying and its very unstable... although that it probably a ME thing and somebody would probably tell me to get something like XP...

There are some things I don't understand about Linux and are anything but perfect, but I think its advantages outweigh Windows.

If you had never used either would you still use Windows? I bet a lot of people wouldn't.
