who do they pay to come up with half-assed schemes like this? 40-bit encryption for a dvd is understandable, at least they tried. but this?

turns out that your cd player/reader is trying to read a confusing track, but can't. your dependable felt marker stops it.

the funniest part is that all the money they would of spent on research to do this can be over come by a 1 dollar felt pen or cheaper depending where you live

Ok I read this article but I am still trying to grasp the idea of the pen scribbling thing. How does this work again? You scratch out the inner rims of the cd?

They (the cd maker) write some gibberish data on the cd so the computer reads it first, finds it's corrupted, and the cd doesn't work on the computer. Hence, people took a marker and wrote over the part that had the gibberish. Therefore, the computer didn't read it because it couldn't "see" it and it continued to the next section, which was the real songs/data.

When are Sony and all the other music distributors going to wake up to the fact that their antiquated music distribution model has come to an end. Charging £10 or so for a music CD is bound to end in piracy. As this thread shows, people will find a way round any copy protection.

Come on Sony, the world has moved on. Get over it.

This is in no way intended to encourage piracy, which is theft. However, Sony are also playing dirty, as I am quite entitled to back up a music CD for my own, or my families / friends use.

The ultimate weapon is in our own hands. We should refuse to buy all copy-protected CD's. Sony would soon stop when they saw their sales take a nose dive!

    Rant over.

You **don't** need to scratch it. Just write a thick black line over the outer(?) track.
