    Question What would you recommend?

    I'm currently subscribed to an online learning package which offers a wide variety of programming languages to learn.

    I already know C, to an apparently acceptable level - passed my exams anyhow... and have started to learn C++, which doesn't seem all that different as of yet (Only been learning a week though, so I shall not jump to conclusions..)

    Anyway, out of the other languages offered what would you recommend as worthwhile studying?

    Languages are:

    Cisco CCDA, Cisco CCNA, FOCUS, Visual Basic 4.0/5.0/6.0, Unix, Sybase, RPG IV Programming, Oracle, Oracle 8...

    I'm willing to admit, that my knowledge of programming lanuages is limited and that since this course also covers networking, I may have just added some non-programming names there...

    Any opinions would be much appeciated..

    If you don't mind not learning another language, but concepts and administration, I would recommend an Oracle course. Oracle is one of the leading database providers.

    On the head there. Some of these are languages, some OS others product specific.

    I'd avoid FOCUS, (an outmoded DB system), and RPG, (any version - old mainframe system), and any non current version of anything else, they are to out of date for todays employment market.

    Networking stuff, (CISCO etc.), is a useful skill, as are databases, (Sybase, Oracle).

    What is worthwhile? Where do you want to go?

    Given that list, with general goals, in this order I would choose,

    VB6,
    Oracle 8,
    CISCO any,
    17th centuary French poetry... (get's the girls if nothing else!)

    I've always seen a greater need for VB developers than anything else ( in my area, that is ). VB may not be as fun as C/C++, but it pays the bills.

    Networking

    I've always been told you only know computing once you know how to netowork so do the Cisco stuff - Im on a Cisco course myself and as far as I see, it is the future.

    VB is very popular, but it does tend to change its flavour so often - by the time you do the course, all job adverts will be asking for VB.net - time for another course!

    Oracle is well worth doing for the same reason - databases and networks go together - plus the C u already have and you should have all the most asked for skills.
    I don't want to belong to any club that'll accept me as a member!

    However, for every CISCO job advert you see, you will see 2 Oracle and 10 VB...
