    Programming Contests

    i've been thinking... (yes, i do think occasionally )

    can we do programming contests? it would certainly be within the bounds of this site. it's definately c/c++ related.
    flashdaddee does something every two months when all is said and done (and said and done and said...). we've had an obfuscated code contest, a pig-latin translator contest, and recently, an encryption contest (which prelude won).

    since cprogramming.com gains more traffic than flashdaddee, there would be more participants. more participants means more fun (and more headaches on the mod's part...but it wouldn't be that hard.)

    so... who's for the idea?

    Code:
    #include <stdio.h>

    int main()
    {
    printf("Hello, world");
    return 0;
    }
    There are my credentials. It seriously sounds like a heated, yet fun contest though.

    BTW, I must say (sorry ygfperson) that this sort of belongs in GD.
    The world is waiting. I must leave you now.

    straight from hell, comes the most pointless program in existance!
    Code:
    #include <stdio.h>
    int main()
    {
    	int x,_x,__x,x__;printf("\n"); scanf("%d",&_x);scanf("%d",&__x);x__ = __x++;
    	x = (_x++) - (__x - x__);if(x>__x){ return 0; }	for(;x<__x;x++){  if(x = __x-1)
    	{ printf("\ndone\n");}}
    	return 0;
    }
    Contest: make an even bigger idiot of yourself than I have made of myself!

    go ahead, move it to gd.

    i was serious, btw. why not something simple, like an object oriented new data type? something like a bignum, or a bitstream, or a 'nother kind of string?

    Sounds like fun to me ...
    When all else fails, read the instructions.
    If you're posting code, use code tags: [code] /* insert code here */ [/code]

    here's what i'm proposing: (and i'm open for suggestions)
    we start a contest, week-long, saturday
    after which the judges take a few days judging the entries and score it according to a 5 point scale.
    there will be a 15-person limit on contestants, first come first serve
    and probably 3, or 4 judges who will report the final scores to me(or a moderator, this is open to change).
    of course, judges can't participate in the contest, nor can they discuss results before they are meant to be released.

    for example:
    pig-latin contest
    14 people sign up
    4 ppl volenteer to judge
    9 people submit their entries (through e-mail, or maybe pm) by the deadline.
    the person who receives all the code entries (me) will e-mail to the judges the pig-latin translators and ask them to judge based on some agreed upon qualities (like efficiency or neatness)
    they report their scores to me and i post the results after averaging the scores together
    say... ken wins. (i'm choosing ken because he lost the flashdaddee contest). he cheers, tastefully thanks the other contestants, and wins some sort of temporary, fleeting praise. (or maybe a name posted somewhere on the website.)

    i'm assuming the mods have no trouble with this. (otherwise they would have said so). flashdaddee does contests in another seperate forum, but then again flashdaddee's known for its many seperate forums...

    so...here are my contest ideas (feel free to suggest others):
    • obfuscated code. (more obfuscated == better)
    • a calculator program written using only bit manipulating operators. (no adding, subtracting, etc.)
    • a text editor. (more features == better)
    • a hex editor.
    • a 3d renderer.
    • an encryption contest, based on newly made encryption methods.

    and of course, all code needs to be either from a standard library (or close to it, like conio.h), or your own.

    ....and if Quzah, Prelude, Salem, or Sayeh were part of the competition, you could forget about competing.

    i suggest we ask the mods here if they can have a sticky pointing to our programming contests over at flashdaddee, so that way people can keep flashdaddee as flashdaddee and cprog as cprog.

    >i'm assuming the mods have no trouble with this

    I think it's a good idea.

    I guess we need three categories for each contest:

    Professional entries
    Hobbyist/student entries
    Judges

    If you have a contest, make a post from it on the GD and I will see that it becomes sticky or an announcement. Send me a PM.
