You want to learn how to hack?
    If so listen up!!!!
First off get your mom to buy you a computer.
Then get a couple of programming books. Good ones to.

Once you can program. (And know what the he|| you are doing)
Study up on protocols. Learn EVERYTHING you can about deep breath

    sockets TCP/IP NetBIOS telnet Routing
    switches hubs UNIX shell programming
html http smtp pop2 pop3 https
php java java script c c++ basic
    AsM windowsAPI processes hexEdItOrs
PERL CGI tunnels etc. etc. etc. etc.

If you can understand all that AND (&&) !(&) but (&&)
be able to find techniques to use on a service, to gain root to your target box. (MeAnIng no bull s$%t viruses) then consider yourself a hacker.
    BOY = dayknight

If you ever have the ability of everything previously mentioned plus alot more
Then and only then present yourself as a hacker!
    Note the bold present.
A HACKER NEVER CALLS HIM/HER SELF BY SUCH A NAME.
    But others do.

What is a hacker? The definitionn of the word hack means to chop or cut in an abstract way. Loosely put, you could "hack up" something quick for a friend. Say like, with a car, or stereo or something. What is a computer hacker though? The true SOLID definition of the word, in which the context you place it, has escaped me for years. A computer "hacker" is a slang, therefore, it is as irellevant as the word pee. Pee = urine.

    Hacker...hm. Get a life.

The Jargon File contains a bunch of definitions of the term `hacker',

The best definition for something coming fromm a jargon file?
This goes back to my slang argument. It isn't something that really has or will be set in stone and has a solid "dictionary" term. Therefore I will never care about the word.

I respect people who know alot about computers. Many people at this site included! Basically, to me there is no such thing as a hacker. If you get into the argument of people "solve problems" with computers....I don't know who put the notion in your head that that is a hacker, but that's wrong. The word hacker is one of the most iffy words out there. Find a dictionary...look in your house, look at dictionary.com and try to find something that accurately describes this thread and it's related content. You won't.

pulls out The New Hacker's Dictionary: Third Edition

Hacker n. [originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe]

    1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.

    2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.

    3. A person capable of appreciating hack value.

    4. A person who is good at programming quickly.

    5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in a 'Unix hacker'. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)

[note: going to skip 6 and 7 as they are non computer versions of the word that doesnt apply to the current discussion --Dalren]

    8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence password hacker, network hacker. The correct term for this sense is cracker.

The term 'hacker' also tends to connote membership in the global community defined by the net. It aslo implies that the person described is seen to subscribe to some version of the hacker ethic.

It is better to be descrived as a hacker by others than to describe oneself that way. Hackers consider themselves something of an elite (a meritocracy based on ability), though one to which new members are gladly welcome. There is thus a certian ego satisfaction to be had in identifying yourself as a hacker (but if you claim to be one and are not, you'll quickly be labeled bogus)

So did you get that out of a webster? If not that is a book catering to the word hacker. It is not a standard dictionary. A standard dictionary would not have a defintion for what has been discussed here because what has been discussed here is not a word that's standard. If you found the word hacker in a standard dictionary I am sure that it would be listed as a slang. It's just like profanity. It's just like the word cool. It's a slang. It is something that has been created by someone. It was created by someone who was impressed by the skills of a friend who was an avid computer user. I will most definately not use the same volcabulary another person decided to CREATE because they could not find another phrase or word.

I just did a search. Webster's collegiate thesaurus did not return any results for hacker.

Anyhow, it is a word I will never care about. Bicker at will!

    later...

From my Oxford Minireference Dictionary & Thesaurus:

hacker n. (colloq.) computer enthusiast, esp. one in gaining unauthorized access to files.

I got a nice honeypot for you if you want to try to hack me... got a few really decent Sub7 emulation programs too.

Don't think your mommy really wants to lose her ISP though, so perhaps you should stay away from people that have been in the game longer than you.

This is the wrong place to come to hack... you could find yourself in a dangerous situation.
