    Wave Of Terror

I have Win2k Pro although I don't know a whole lot about administrating it. I've had the operating system for a couple months now and it has been solid. It has never crashed on me. This is a huge improvement over Win9X, my previous OS. Win9X used to crash a couple of times per week especially if I did a lot of web surfing. Nicks Win9X crashed every 20 minutes!!

Anyway the wave of terror has begun. Now that I finally have an operating system that doesn't crash there is an even worse problem. All these virii are now out and they are much more sophisticated than they used to be. I obviously never open attachments, but these viruses can be contracted regardless. It is especially easy to catch these virii if you use Outlook Express. Infact nothing can stop them. Microsoft daily service packs are maddening. Who wants to have to update ever 2 hrs? I swear these crackers are going to write malicious virii soon enough. I hear that code red caused something like 2 billion dollars in dammage, and this is a virus that they caught early. I was able to avoid that one. The fact is that either OS writers can't protect users from virii or they don't want to. Now wait till this gets worse, it's getting worse, and the next generation OS's are even more dependant on the internet! It will be really interesting or else really sad to see what comes. It's obviously not going to be a bowl of cherries.

All these service packs are dedicated to fixing security holes manipulated by virus writers. What is the root problem? Why is it soo easy to write a virus or else why are there soo many highly skilled programmers writing virii? How far are we away from having any security? Is internet security better now than it was two years ago? I don't remember there being so many virii and having to defend your computer so agressively such as not being able to use certain programs and having to put your broswer security to 'high'. This problems getting worse me thinks... yes my precious...

I installed sp's 1 and 2 on my win 2k machines. All they did
was slow things down to an unbelievable crawl. I don't
know what they're supposed to do, but I chucked them
quick. Everything's fine and dandy. 2k is the best ms os 2
    (picture of a date here).

I have two machines running like this and will soon add a
third. Never a problem with a virus. I don't even run an
anti-virus program on them (knocksonwood). MS has warned
Win2k users who have IIS installed that they are vulnerable
to the code red virus. They have also issued a patch to
correct the problem. I don't have IIS installed on any of my
    2k computers.

This latest nimda thing is much more widespread than code
red because it apparently knows no favorites, but attacks whatever is in its path, linux or nt. It's a dirty world, deeno,
a shower can only do so much.

For once, glad I run ME....

I still say we should write a worm that installs NAV on all systems it hits.

I know a computer tech or two who also like ME. All I ever
considered it to be was a driver update. I have a 500Mhz
Pentium running ME and that maching NEVER gets turned off
more than five times a week. Runs like a clock. Runs anything
and everything . My youngest uses it the most---AIM, games,
the whole schmeer. It's had a virus or two, but it never
    crashes. Go figger.

    >AIM, games, the whole schmeer.

Yeah, that was my only b*tch about 2K - I couldn't run old games... If there was some program out there that let me do that, I'd probably be on it in a heartbeat (hint, hint)

acutally virus writer arn't usually (though sometimes are) 733+ hax4r's there just a bunch of bored monkeys trying to cause trouble... im not going to spread panic by telling you what ther truly 733+ can do but just know that not all of them are idiots.

    >I still say we should write a worm that installs NAV on all systems it hits.<

actually there is a Linux worm that using the security holes of a previous worm finds othere worms on a sys removes them patches the security hole and propagates itself to more systems.

WinXP has compatibility modes so i can run games/programs for ALL previous Windows OSes, it has all the features of 2K since its built off it and all the stuff NT/2k lacked that 9x had minus security hole that is.

God do i sound like a salesman or what.

    Bored monkeys? lol!

That Linux worm is kinda cool - is there anything comparable for Windows?

OK, that's what I had heard... But there's no program for 2K that does the equivalent? Not that it really matters anyways - I'll probably be picking up XP when it comes out....

    unfortunatly not.

i havn't really kept up on it... but i don't think so the incompatability seems to be at the OS level so it would have to be and imulator of 9x or some thing of the sort.

i could be completely wrong though...
