Thread: Funny virii :(

Hi!

It's monday, and there's something wrong, I feel it.
Strange virii are attacking some of us. It's not a big deal, you feel awful for 2 days, get headache and all the stuff, then everything is ok again.

I hate being sick, and there's no medicine.

Ever met that syndrom?

What's virii? Virus?

Virii is the plural of virus. Saying "viruses" is totally false.
Btw, it is a latin word...

I would agree with you, but a particular dictionary insists "viruses" is indeed the plural of virus. Does anyone have a (more) credible authority that says "virii" is the plural?

Just take a *real* english dictionary (normal book), not one of those found on the net.

Don't get me wrong. I agree that virii is the plural of virus (or so I thought). However, "becuase I said so" just doens't fly with me. Can you name a dictionary that clearly states virii is the plural?

Hmm... Merriam-Webster also states viruses is the plural, and virii is not even a word. I guess I'll just have to admit I was wrong on the virii thing and begin using the word "viruses" from now on ;)

The Cambridge dictionary recognises viruses as a plural of virus....but does not recognise virii

Fourth Declension

Nouns end in -us. The Latin plural is spelled the same as the singular.

hiatus [gap], pl. hiatuses (or hiatus)

plexus [network], pl. plexuses (or plexus)

nexus [bond], pl. nexuses (or nexus)

There was a similar discussion on www.battle.net. It should be viri, not virii. And viri is english while viruses is american.

Viri is the Latin nominative plural for man, viruses is the Latin plural for virus.

Neither is English or American.

Nevermind, if I'm right or wrong, I'm happy I started such a popular thread. ;°)))
