i'm sick of this... so sick.

So... i'm trying to talk to someone and they make a sentence completely unintelligable by misusing a word or two, so i wrote out the sentence the way i thought it would be and asked the person if that was what he meant. He said no, and continued on to say that his usage of a word was his own personal "style".

Well, i'm sorry to break it to you, but if your style makes you make no sense, it's more idiocy than style. I also know that this person speaks english as his native language, and has no reason to use words dramatically incorrectly to the point where you can't understand what he's trying to say.

I took the time to point out this little mistake that made his sentence's meaning unclear to me and i tried to tell him that english is a science, you can't just take words and substitute them in even though they are synonymous with the word you are taking out. The person then proceeds to verbally assault me by first calling me a "nerd" through using code (in which he used the wrong operator to declare that i was a nerd [he used '==' instead of '=']). Next, he went on to say that i was the "private school type" and that i am nothing without someone to teach me what i know. He continued to say

without someone to lecture you in life, you're worthless
    ...
    without it, you ain't ****
(i'm guessing that the double negative in the second statement means something like "without it, you are (favourite expletive here)")

then he told me that this conversation was useless and that he was busy downloading a tutorial, which completely places him in the ficticious genre he put me into since a tutorial is pretty much a lecture and he was completely depending on that to learn.

well.. the point of the matter is, think before you speak or you will say something stupid and make everyone think you don't deserve the spit and feces you are made out of. This person had already proven to me his lack of common sense and intelligence on at least two occasions previous.

point number 2 would definately be: don't insult someone directly, reason with them to the point where you have proven their arguements worthless and stupid. Doing it the smart way makes you look superior and them look inferior, whereas if you just insult them, it just makes you look like a load of feces.

I tend to ignore people like that, it's just my personal style I suppose.

    I agree.

Anyone know of more mature C++ or Windows programming discussion boards?

This is the best. There are those that come and go and we see the lions share of idiots amongst them, but there is a generous scattering of great minds here as well. AFAIK the good far outweighs the bad.

And its sooo nice 'n easy to ignore on-line.

Maybe the fact that you can't understand makes you less intelligent... There are many people in this world from all walks of life and each one has his own manner of speaking. Are you going to go around and tell each one that he's wrong? As human being, it's his right to use words any way he pleases. And there aint nothin' wrong with a good ol' double negative.

The fact that you would even waste your time writing such a long post about something so trivial makes me sick ... so sick.

    >>> one has his own manner of speaking.

Very true. However, there are some who use a "style" which is deliberately intended to make it more difficult to read in general forums.

Remember, many people here do not have English as their first language. Odd word use, and phonetic spellings do not readily translate.

People that fall into this category are simply being rude and arrogant. In a forum where they know the other people, fine, whatever they like.

Can't be bothered to try working these things out, I have better things to do/read. By using this kind of "style", people are simply reducing the size of their audience, and hence their ability to influence others.

I'm not sure whether to take that personally, or not. My intended audience was primarily Aran. I don't normally use this type of syntax, nor do I misuse words at will. Look at my past posts. My point is ... rude, arrogant, or whatever ... Aran has no right to come to these boards and flame someone for it. Especially when the case in point took place in private and not on these boards. In my humble opinion, he's trying to make up for his own shortcomings by cutting down others in public. And that is more unacceptable than using lingo ... thanks.

    So listen dude...

Any variation of the language that is uncommon takes away time.
It takes someones time changing it, and it takes my time decyphering it.

Conclusion: A different style to speak wastes my time.

( And the speakers time, too, but that's not my problem )

Everyone is entitled to his style. I'm entitled to not waste my time
and just don't read it. If someone wants me to read it for content and not
just to do my moderator duties and check it for nuclear weapon plans,
    he'd better adjust his style.

    Conclusion:
Posters profit from a clean, easy to read english, because more
people will read the post and more people will answer.

    Invicible:

    >>> I'm not sure whether to take that personally, or not.

If i'd have meant it personally, I would not have said...

    >>> People that fall into this category are simply being rude and arrogant.

... I'd have said something like "You are being...". If you read the post, you will see that I used the correct term several times.

    >>> $0 Ii$73n d00d

Yeah, actually I did bother to work that out as it was so short, and relevent to the topic, but normally I don't bother.

One of the problems with the medium in which we are working. The clearer one is the less scope for error/misunderstandings.

    >you little flamer you

eh.. this is barely a flame.. it's more of an "i'm annoyed at someone for something and i don't want to be annoyed at you for doing the same". It's a strange type of advice.

I think that this is thread serves us about as much good as an "america sucks" or "windows sucks" thread (except this one actually offers some advice)....

Oh... you mean kinda like your own "style" of advice? I'm sorry, I don't understand.

I'm sorry, I should have made myself more clear in the first post that way I might have avoided the second.

    Peace.
