Well if you have a laptop, and its only power source has been depleted, it just might have negative effects...
What about a desktop computer?
I'm not really sure, but I know that it takes a really long time to burn out a desktop's battery. Some of the new ones I hear last like 10 years.

I would imagine so, that if your motherboard battery was dead, your BIOS would be unable to initialize and hence fail to boot properly, if at all.
However, I would suggest finding other problems first. Those batteries rarely fail, and i would imagine your motherboard would have a beep code built in to let you know if it was dying or gone..
If the battery goes dead it should only lose the CMOS settings,
etc.. I had a system that had a battery that went out and it
booted it just had defaults set for everything (lost the date/time,
etc.).
If you have an old computer, then you won't have a problem without a battery, except for clock failure and inability to retain a BIOS password.
If you have a newer system, then you might have problems, although if you have a new system with a dead battery, you have very bad luck.
Basically if your system if old enough for the battery to fail, it is probably old enough to operate without the battery.
I haven't heard of too many people's batteries going south. Does it sound like it's running or does nothing happen? You might have a bad power supply or maybe fried the motherboard.
