what would you say is a reasonable amount of banner ads per page?

1 in general is enough! 2 if they aren't too big and don't take away from the page.

depends, I have seen site were there were four or five adds, yet the site was extremely easy to navigate and the adds in noway got in the way of the content, then again I have seen sites were one was to many, depends
