Do people even play text RPGs anymore?

I am starting on a pretty ambitious but accomplishable goal of creating a text based game with a great storyline, very large world(first map will be roughly 10000*10000 steps) a lot of rules will follow D&D but some will not. I also plan to add network support so up to 8 people(or maybe more) can play with/against each other. In other words this will evetually be like a MUD on a smalleer level. Will people even be interested in this, or will I find that 2 or more months of programming will be all for naught? If this would be playable for you, what are some features that you would like to see in such a game that would help make you play it?

There are still a number of fairly active MUDs out there, and each has a fairly loyal client base. If you offer something people want (and the people know how to get to your MUD), you will have a few players :)
