What would you do this in this situation?

I have two other roommates, two decent friends. We signed a lease for a year on an apartment and we didnt see that the lease renews at nine months if you dont tell tham you want out... so we are stuck for another year in about 2 weeks. Well about 3 weeks ago my roommate found out about this and didnt tell me or the other roommate until yesterday, this could have been time that we could have been trying to find somebody to sublease. On top of that, both of the other roommates say this is a relief for them because they dont have to find another place immediately, but I have to go back to Texas for my mothers wedding and to prepare to go back to college starting in August. They are not willing to even split the cost to put an ad in the newspaper advertising the place... they say its too expensive and that they will just tell thier friends and whatnot. I am trying to be a friend here and I said I would stay through april to help with the bills and pay a last months rent, but they expect me to pay money even past april for the apartment... What do you guys think? Are they being totally unreasonable, or am I being a #$%^ when I tell them that I am not going to pay anything because they are so reluctant to even advertise the place?

I think you're in the right, but be careful what you do anyways - you don't want to end up getting sued over this...

Well, I'd have to say the fault is a bit on you and a lot on them.

Your fault for not reading the lease (sometimes you need a magnifying glass to read those suckers. Hell my lease says I can't burn candles or incense, yeah, whatever!). And their fault for not alerting you to the clause when they discovered it.

Is it really that expensive to list something in the classifieds? I know (down here anyway) that if you run the ad on weekdays, its cheaper than if you run it on weekends. Have you thought of putting it up on the net? Got quite a few hits looking for roomates on google. They may be cheaper.

Now if you've offered to go out of your way to help find another roommate for them and they aren't jumping at the offer, then to hell with them, I say. You made the offer: technically you are still within the time limit on your lease (if you signed it, and if you didn't sign the lease, they have no legal recourse, you'll just lose "two decent friends") so if I were in your situation, I wouldn't feel bad about leaving.

But then again, I've been called a heart-less bastard...

[edit]LOL - Wild mad props to cheez for the "Single and Sassy" bit[/edit]

If they are not willing to 'help' in the search for a new room mate, they can not be annoyed if you find some 'Glee nazi' or similar to take your place.

See the 'Most effective way to annoy someone' thread.

If you signed the lease you are legally liable so make sure you get your name off it, or that the real estate knows you are leaving.

umm.. I'd say you have the right to do whatever the hell you want, and not be expected to pay any longer than you are living there... if they don't want to help you find a replacement, then they should foot the bill... but as cheeze said... don't go off the handle about it... you don't want to get sued..
