What ever happened to computer systems that were fully upgradeable? I just bought a new IBM comp and was going to put some extras into it, when I popped off the cover I notice it only had 2 pci slots. How lame is that? What if I wanted to add more? on my other comp trying to add stuff takes a couple hours. You can barely get your hands into it. Sup wit dat?
Build it yourself and you know what you are getting.
If you want to pop the hood IBM is not the brand you want. Build it your self. It is easy , kinda like putting lego together, and cheaper

apparently there are plans to completelt alter computers as we know them and sell them without floppy drives, expansion slots and only with usb ports!
i think the answer is definitly diy! one of my finest machines was built from mishpmash of components and it is the most reliable

The 2 PCs I have are a mishmash of different parts. I started off with an IBM Aptiva and when I wanted to upgrade, I discovered the same limitations as you.
You should either DIY , or buy a clone of a major brand. Either way then, you can customise your computer to exactly how you want it.

I too bought a pre-fab unit back in the day before I really knew much about computers... then again, that was when I was still in high school... but since then I yanked my head from my .......... and have been building my own ever since. They're ten times faster and much more reliable than this garbage their putting out with the pre-fab machines.
OH, and to anyone just getting into it... once you figure out how to build your own(which is far from rocket science), don't let anyone know that you know how to play with them. I basically have my own side business because of it...
speaking of DIY... my current system can traced back to my old 286, upgrading parts and pieces over time. there was no total overhaul... which i think is pretty neat!can you guys say the same?
and, ah yes... peace please! i hope this brings the rest of the world together as much [if not more] as it has brought us together. hmmm.... i suppose we've been a tight community for a while... wow...

well.
i got the case from a friend - the case used to be the case for a network server on the university of plymouth cs network
the motherbord is from a p1 with a pentium from a different machine and a heatsink/fan from a different machine
the monitor is from a different machine as is the keyboard and the mase
the soundcard is from sources unknown and the vga card is from the same machine as the motherboard.
it has no sides and nopower switch, the machine is switched on by reaching inside the case and throwing the master switch on the pdu.
its slow (even though its overclocked)
