no, sorry, both answers are wrong. do you want me to
say the answer? of course if you find the answer you
must explain WHO and WHY this is the answer,
or everyone can assume that maybe you find it by luck.

    I know! I know!

He suggests that him and the youngest brother both split it 50-50 (OR that the youngest gets it all, but then HE'd have none...)

OK, this thread hasn't been touched in 3 days, so how about an answer? (preferable not from the poster, but I suppose that would work, too)

The answer to stoned_coder's puzzle, (body in the telephone box), is that he has caught a big fish, telephoned a friend, and, in the way of anglers, thrust his arms out to either side to indicate the huge size of his catch. Unfortunately, he put his hands through the glass either side of the box and has bled to death. (Or at least, that is the answer I know).

ok, i will try to explain it but it is not easy
when i say (1) i mean the older brother
when i say (2) i mean the second older brother
when i say (3) bla bla....
    (5) is the last brother, the smaller one.

    so, here it is.

if we reach the point where (4) is going to propose
something, then (4) is allways a loser because whatever
he propose, (5) will say "NO" and he will take all the money.
so, we are thinking that (4) does not want to be alone with
    (5).
so, (4) wants to have (3) with his side.
(that is because the vote between (4) and (5) is going
to be 1-1 and therefore the propose of (3) will pass)
so, (3) and (4) are in the same team.
    BUT....
    (5) knows that. he do not want to reach the point where
    (3) is going to propose something.
the only way to achieve that is to have (2) by his side.
of course even if (5) votes for (2)'s proposal he will not
get the money ((3) and (4) is against).
with this way, (2) and (5) are losers except if they
    have (1) with their side.
so this is the final scene.
    (1) is going to propose something.
    (2) is going to accept that.
    (3) is going to vote against that.
    (4) is going to vote against that.
    (5) is going to accept that.

and the score is 2-2 ...therefore (1)'s proposal is going
    to pass....

now, the issue is what is the deal between the brothers.
well, the deal is strongly depents from all of 3 brothers.
if one of them disagree then the money will go to (3) and (4)
so i guess that the propose of (1) is going to be
"i will take 1/3 of the money.
    (2) will take 1/3 of the money.
and (5) will take 1/3 of the money."

But why isn't s_c's guess right? Since (1), (2), and (3) know the most they could get is 1/3 of the money (since that'll give a majority), why couldn't (1) divide it that way?

because each brother wants to get as many money as
he can...so (1) (who is proposing) knows that with
this way he can achieve that. (3) and (4) can do nothing
    about it!
