    Linux on a 486 laptop?

I'm a newbee to Linux so bare with me...

    laptop: 486, 12M, 400M.

The things I need are debian potato, Xfree86, and a GUI wich doesn't use too much memory. (blackbox? fluxbox?)

    more?

You should be able to fit all that in 400 megs if you're careful. I suspect you'll want gcc and glibc as well.

I second your nomination of using Blackbox.

I believe it is possible. I know a basic Linux install with the development modules can weigh in at less than 300MB. I'm just not sure about adding X and a WM.

once again people dont talk about something you dont understand...

i would suggest maybe going the unix route and running freebsd or something like debian/slackware if you want to go linux... as for having a GUI you could but it would be quite slow even if there are some gui's designed specifically for 486's... i dont know of any of the top of my head since i like to run with no GUI

as for the install i would suggest you only install the one single required packadge for your distro and then once you got your box up and running add some other packadges since hd space will be a bit tight

Xterria...Say something helpful for once. Don't just critisize.

If you really want to do this, I would suggest getting a RAM and maybe a hard drive upgrade...Unless you want just the bare minimum of Linux tools.

    shutup shutup shutup....

As for the laptop... there are linux distros that can be run off of floppies... you should be able to find one that will work for you... but i think $null is right when saying you might want to forget any idea of a GUI..

    Windows 3.1 ran on a 486.

That's a GUI, GUIs are easily possible on 486's.

Xterria-> I am sure your parents have bought you a really nice computer and that you are a spoiled kid. But not everyone is so it would be nice if you could just mature alittle bit.

gunne-> I say it should work perfectly ok. I been runing different versions of Linux with GUI's on 486 66 450 hard drive with no problems.
