    Who are the best?

In my opinion, ID are really great programmers. They make very cool games [Quake, Quake II, Quake III, Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom II] but they aren't very original, they make sequels a lot and they stick to 1st person shooters. Bulfrog were pretty original but they started to repeat themselves...

    Hmm.

I'm with you. Also Ensemble Studios, because the Age Of Empires games they made. Oh, and ID Didn't make Return To Castle Wolfenstein...Gray Matter did. But as far as 1st person games, ID Software baby!

Alawar makes some pretty good shareware games. Croteam is also good, but my friend told me that they made Serious Sam 2 very weird.

Lionhead studios (Peter Molyneaux's outfit) - he has always been responsible for some of the most innovative games - Populous, Syndicate, Black and White - not everyone might like his games but they do try something new.
Ion Storm Austin, Warren Spectors lot (think they have changed the name now though but cant remember off the top of my head what they changed to) - they now contain some ex-Looking Glass people who were some of my favourite developers.
    Bioware - brilliant rpgs
Possibly also Valve - they outdid ID's FPS's with Half Life

Anyone else not real happy about developers whose games are almost totally geared towards multiplay? I mean, multiplay's okay, but a good single player game (like Deus Ex) is really key, in my mind...

    Black Isle -- Fallout 1 & 2 and hopefully 3 sometime soon
Valve -- HL, TF2 if they ever get there act together and finish it
Id is better at makeing game engines then games themselves.

Max payne had a **** story and those dream levels were pointless, you just keep running round in pointless circles and falling off lines.

Cool bullet-time stuff, though. [Gets a bit old after like 2 seconds]

The story for Max Payne wasn't all bad, but the dream sequences were lame, yeah....
