Well theoretically the same way you learned your naitve language. Making associations.
The truth behind the matter is that absloutly nobody exactly knows how.
People still don't know all that much on how the brain works and most current attempts at ai are modeled on the human brain.
Ken is right, most attempts are based on sorting and storing data using association. But this is only how human memory works. The core of the brain has a lot of different bits and peices that each do different things and people are still just guessing at which bit does what.
We are still a long way from being able to take these different bits and peices and figuring out how they come together to make a human conscience. I belive that this is the most important link in being able to create ai.
Who says AI has to mimic human intelligence?
All spelling mistakes, syntatical errors and stupid comments are intentional.
Well so far most attempts at it have mimiced it.
And its much easier to build something from a working model than to jsut start from scratch.
A definition of intelligence is needed. For most of us, we would say someone that is capable of fast calculations in their head or with a large memory would be intelligent. Those are simple taks for a computer. The things we do everyday like recognize objects with our eyes, walk, drink from a glass, or read are more difficult things to be programmed.
I think we're many years away from anything resembling "human" intelligence. As was mentioned, a deeper knowledge of how we work is needed before we can make something close. Not too mention, we still don't have the capable hardware available (yet).

I wonder if we are ever able to create a network which has the same intelligence capabilities as us human beings. Making fast calculations is not necessarily intelligence. In my opinion intelligence has to do with making decisions and creativity.
Making decisions and creativity are the base of solving problems.
Most algorithms today make use of the trial and error method to solve problems. I wonder if computers will ever be able to think on a very abstract level and use creativity to solve problems. With creativity I mean solving a problem using knowledge from a very different field. Like solving math problems using knowledge from biology or psychology, for example.
In my opinion, intelligence is the ability to learn and make decisions from that learning process...And although you can do this with a robot or whatever, a robot will never be able to totally emulate a human, although that isn't the point of this thread.
What will people say if they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
