They seemed to prefer numbers like 999999 for some reason.

    ahhhh that's better.
Better yet you can turn off avatars through the edit options link of the options section in the control panel.

That is true. But only works for this site. Whereas <ESC> works for the whole of the internet. I prefer to see the avatars as they allow for quick reference as to who is posting.

    Gay milk cartons?

Anyway, personally (which means I'm speaking only for myself here) when I read something I'm there for the words. I like an icon to identify the poster as that helps for quick recognition at a later point in the discussion. But if I wanted to watch an animation I would....go to a site that shows cartoons and watch all the pretty moving pictures until I became a drooling mess.

However, this is the intertubes and part of the appeal of that is that there are a million different tasty doohickies interacting which is great so I don't mind a GOOD animated avatar if the user has created it themselves and it is interesting to look at (and I've done it myself in the past). What twists my nipple is when people have crap like "Dancing Spidey" or the black kid mouthing "That's racist" as avatars - for crying out loud people get some sodding originality.

But when all is said and done, the site admin decides what is and what is not acceptable and I'm happy to abide by those rules for as long as I want to visit the site.

So please, take this as a plea from a seasoned ESCAPE presser - if you have an animated avatar, make it original.

    /steps off soapbox

I don't know, I clicked those links a gazillion times and never got a free iPod. I obviously just missed the boat each time.

I'm more upset that the dimensions you can use are so small.

You want 100000000 gif images for an avatar? That's either one hell of an animation, or you're just plain greedy.

Ironically, now I find MK27's avatar really annoying. I want to punch it in the face.
