How much over a year old? If it's only say 1.5 years old, you have a pretty good case that they are selling drives which are crap. Maybe a well-written threat will get you a new drive. I have drives that are 12 years old and still work. I don't think we should accept it when manufacturers tell us we're out of luck just because the drive is out of warranty.
(EDIT: It's a common misconception that you need a receipt in order to make a warranty claim. You don't, actually.)

I agree, there is no reason a drive shouldn't last 10+ years under normal use. Of course it will be obsolete long before then. Mechanically its a sealed system, so the bearings should last at least that long, the ones in cars last 2-3 tiems that long with much lower grade lubricant, more vibration and adverse operating conditions at much higher temperatures under far heavier loads. Electrically, well, silicon never wears out once you get past the initial failure curve, it lasts over 100 years unless you are pushing too much current through it. A chip that lasts 5 years will most likely last 500. So the failures can only be in teh physical media itself or the little arm thingy.
The other drive I had go bad was an UW-SCSI that crapped out after 3 years due to a head crash.
My Seagate drives have a 5 year warranty.
I sent my bad one back after a year and they just shipped me a new one.
Also, a lot of Gold credit cards automatically give you an extra year's warranty if you buy something on that card.
