    Passing my first stone, owwwwwwww.

The nurse in the ER actually asked me to please stop screaming as there were children in the ER. About the 3rd time she repeated this demand, my responce was 'SHUT THE ........ UP ..........!'. I apologized later, after they finally gave me a pain killer.

Oh its 40 degrees out and they didnt even offer to let me use a gown to go home in, I just had my shorts and socks on. I had to stop at walgreen to pick up my perscription adn I bought a shirt there, but still.

That's the last time Ill go to that hosptial, even though its the closest one.

Normally it's the things I say after the pain killers that I have to apologize for.

Well, they gave me 'a massive dose' according to the doctor and all it did was reduce the pain to a manageable level.

Kidney stone? Yeah, they suck big time. I wouldn't worry about offending the nurse though, they get over that stuff rather quickly - they've heard and seen it all. I'm pretty much the patient from hell when I'm in there. I've cursed them out, hurled objects and even threatened to strangle one with the catheter she came to jam me with.

On a serious note, you might want to alter your diet some. They have a habit of returning (stones) if you don't know what it is that's causing them. Sometimes, a specialist will actually give you a net to whize through so you can retrieve the li' buggers - then they can advise you on dietary changes.

How long does it usualyl take to pass them? They gave me enough pain medication for about 3 days.

A few days, sometimes weeks. It all depends on their location and size. If they get lodged, it (or they) may need sonic treatment or there's a few types of meds that might break them up and make them pass easier. Drink plenty of water, that seems to help flush them.

I didn't really give two thoughts to Mr. Abachler's failure to eat proper amounts of ruffage until I was hanging around at a friend's house last night and for some reason totally unconnected to what was going on the image of this software engineer limping out of a hospital in nothing but socks and underware seemed so ridiculously funny I splurted out all the smoke and could not stop laughing for several minutes. My friends seemed alarmed but not too much so.

I hope you don't fail the second one!

If we are talking kidney-stones, then the problem is not related (directly at least) to roughage! Water, salt and several other ingredients IN the food may affect it, as does (was with almost everything to do with your body) "choosing the right parents to get the right genes passed down". The stones are commonly formed from Calcium-salts, such as Calcium oxalate or Calcium citrate.

That's all true Mat, but even if you're not genetically prone to the development of stones, you can still develop one. If your doctor advises you to avoid a certain food(s) and drink more water, I'd suggest you do it. These things hurt like hell, and if it's big enough, on its way out you're going to want to tell every woman who'll listen you know what child birth must feel like.

Wow, from what I learned in my ship's medicine class I thought they'd be a little more sympathetic to you, as people really do literally drop from the pain this causes.

Hope its all done soon and it doesn't happen again.

I got a call from the hospital, they 'graciously' decided not to charge me for the visit. Although the are still charging me for the ER Doctor and the CT scan.

5mg of Oxycodone every 4 hours, it was quite effective. That's the best stuff they make, they give it to cancer patients, albeit in stronger doses.
