    hp warranties

I recently installed Ubuntu on the hard drive of my computer. Now when I load it up I get some stupid error 15. I am not even going to attempt to fix it as that NEVER turns out well for me. Instead, I am going to throw my laptop out the window. Does installing Linux(and removing Windows) void my warranty?

Look over your terms, but "yes" is a very likely answer. Technically some warrantees are so restrictive that you can't even do routine maintenance, like clean your keyboard, while keeping the machine under warrantee.

Is there not some recovery CDs? Typically, manufacturers do ship them with the laptops in case something should go wrong.
Put them in and restore the computer to the way it was when you bought it.

I would ask a friend [or use a second e-mail account] to send HP an e-mail to their "pre-sales support" to ask if installing Linux on top of a pre-installed Windows voids the warranty. If the answer is Yes, then tough (but I would still try to get it fixed under warranty - after all, it's not the OS that broke it, right?). If it's no, then you have proof that your machine is under warranty if they start messing you about when you send it for "fixing".

Some manufacturers put the 'recovery' on a secret portion of the hard drive that is marked as read only. If this gets hosed then you are SOL. I'm not sure what HP does but Gateway does this on most every laptop. This info comes from a very painful and traumatic personal experience.

My hp machine has a recovery partition that can be read. There is also an option once it is restored to factory default to burn a DVD or a set of CDs that will restore the computer. If lruc never did this then he is screwed, pretty much.

    Yeah.. same here.

However, I was able to call support and they mailed me recovery CDs. So there's a chance you could do the same thing. (Or resintall Ubuntu?, is this a hardware problem?)

I have been trying to reinstall Ubuntu, but it is not working. This really sucks because Ubuntu is the only distro I could get working on my laptop(tried 5 other big ones!). I keep getting an error at exactly 66% each time I try reinstalling it. I will copy the error in a minute. One of the distros I haven't tried yet is openSUSE. But, I am running a live cd which means I would have to order the cds.

The first thing I do, and I'd suggest the same is backup this magical partition then get rid of it :-).

Seriously a laptop is just like a PC, if it breaks you can *usually* fix it yourself unless it's something like the screen -- even then it's not impossible.
