You know, some people say Sun is only interested in themselves, but I don't care. I just looked at Google Code, and I didn't even know they had project hosting, and their project hosting site is atrocious. Not user-friendly at all. This new Project Kenai is already more usable than that, at a first glance, and this GitHub thing is nice with it's graphical information all up front, but not with it's textual information. Also just at a first glance. This Kenai thing seems to have the information about projects way more accessible than either of those two.

Really, I don't think any of these really stand up to sourceforge, but we all know sf has its problems too. But at least sf has the information of its projects readily accessible and categorized. I don't see that so much on those other two sites. Just waste of real estate. So I don't see why the article is comparing those to Kenai.

But I like that Sun it at least trying, and not totally sucking at it either, from what I can see.

Here's to hoping they'll create a little competition.

ps could people stop putting "beta" on all their websites? It's like a disclaimer in your logo. as if you expect it not to work or something. just imo, anyway.

    I like Sun.

They produce the best freeware Virtual Machine Emulation by far and it's played a big role in my personal development in the technology field. Plus I pretty much got forced on Solaris in my college as all the computer facilities on campus kept all of their development tools on Solaris.

Do you use Solaris at home? I'm interested to know...

Personally I like Sun too , for pretty much the same reasons.

It's odd because I find Google Code easy to use, and Project Kenai atrocious... seriously.

Considering there are members who registered in 2003 it does seem odd... plus I (as a user) don't really care if it's BETA or not

Only problem with sf.net is it's size, and it isn't managed well because of that (not saying I could do better). For example, they were still running PHP4 long after support was dropped for it (along with an old SQL build too), which is terrible for "cutting edge" PHP projects. Only recently have they started the upgrade from PHP4 to PHP5. Still there is a HUGE bottleneck between the database servers and the webservers, and I mean HUGE!

(errata: I could swear Sun's logo was red, but apparently is blue)

I too share a deep respect for Sun. Mostly due to its obvious commitment to Open Source solutions while retaining a viable business. I'll be barracking for Kenai.

I'm going through a middle age crisis with Google that apparently isn't just going away with couple therapy. I feel the company whose synonym used to be Innovation is no more. And I'm hard pressed to use Google Code and will prefer to look somewhere else.

Soon enough I'll finally open my project for public open distribution. SF.Net seems a viable option but damn me if it doesn't look like besides my project I'll also be managing the management system of my project. I do not want the aggravation. I'm also unsure if I'm willing to support/participate in a service which seems to have political motivations or allows itself to be politically oriented.

So sometime soon i'll be looking more closely at such places as tigris.og, berlios, gforge, ... and now Kenai.

I keep a virtual machine with OpenSolaris on my laptop... but only for the purposes of providing better technical support on the OS when a question is asked regarding it. Generally I'll either use Vista, XP, or Kubuntu these days. OpenSolaris doesn't offer much more than either or those three. Everything that it does well it took from Linux... it just has a weaker package management system.
