Nice vistas with the equivalent Google Earth version

So, there was a period of time today while at work where I found myself with not much to do. In my free time I did what I always do: read slashdot, read wikipedia, etc., etc., etc.

My readings somehow took me to read about the city of Sibari in Italy, which is nearby a city in Italy where I used to live. After the interesting read, I opened up Google Earth and did some exploring.

Eventually I came upon a town I visited once called Morano. It sits in the heart of the Calabria region of Italy and has some amazing views (especially from the castle at the top of the hill). Something that I found that was awesome is that real height-maps have been implemented into Google Earth, and so all the elevation is present.

So I found one of my photos from Morano when I was visiting there, and then I situated myself into the same location on Google Earth, and this is what I got:

    Comparing the views of Morano

Amazing view, isn't it? I was also pleasantly surprised that it was so accurately depicted in Google Earth.

Anyways, upload your own amazing vistas (with Google Earth comparisons attached)! Let's see if yall have some good ones.

Cool! I always wanted stuff like that in Google earth, but I haven't played with it for a few years.

Anyway, I found a picture of terrain that is mine ... I don't own the rest. Sorry about the quality it's taken from a helmet cam, plus I'm no good with image editing

Taken from the Strzelecki Ranges just out of Traralgon in Victoria, Australia.

It's a little off, I should have been down the road a bit more -- but the camera is hard to steer!

Wow. That program is in sore need of finer heightmap resolution, more resolute textures, and a simple sky shader to convey the feeling of distance.
Perfect example of how the multiple scattering effects of the atmosphere really help our brains determine distances. In the right image you really can't tell how far you can see because it lacks common visual cues. It also lacks objects which basically turns it into a depthless render.

True, and what's really poor is that some news stations in my country use Google earth to show where places are... Ie it jumps from Australia to Iraq for example.

How do they get the height of the terrain? Laser from a satellite?

For most places, surveys of the surface has been done to give you elevation lines, so that could be the way they get that info.
